UMI Steering keeps loosening?

Well I did a search for this cuz I figured it was pretty common, but I couldn't find anything.

I have recently installed UMI steering on the SJ and it keeps loosening.

I tried using blue loctite on it and it still loosens. Should I use red loctite on there?

Appreciate it:biggthumpup:

Yes, use red. Clean the threads on both, the stud, and the Nylok nut with Brakleen and/or acetone, then apply red.

Also inspect your o-rings to ensure that they are well-lubricated and that the loosening isn't coming from torn o-rings.

You need to use red loctite and give it 24hrs to cure.

Or use a castle nut and pin.

Sounds great. The system/orings are brand new and definitely well lubricated so I'll try red loctite and let it sit for 24 hours.

Thanks guys:biggthumpup:

you can also contact parrdaddy, he ha been playing with a nut with a setscrew, I have been running one for a few months, at first I had not loctited it at all, only came loose once because I did not tighten up the setscrew all the way.

McMaster Carr carries threaded shaft collars in stainless that start at a few bucks. Do a search on "shaft collars" at www.mcmaster.com. They have numerous styles (side-lock, double side-lock, etc.). Is this similar to what Parr is using? Does he source these from available vendors or is he machining these himself.

Parr takes a nyloc nut and drills and taps the set screw.

if you are going to use a set screw you should put a small piece of nylon or brass the same dia. as the tap drill hole . A piece of 1/8 brass rod usually works .1/8 long.this prevents the threads from getting damaged by the setscrew

What I did was put the nut in a vise about 1/4 - 1/2 on the top.. tightin a little bit, check it untill the top is a slight oval.. never comes loose again !! (I stole that from the chevy days)

I love that TBM Nut, but $30? Still I'd love to have one. For now I'm trying Butch's idea. Clamped it into an oval and slapped it on!

i had a problem with that on my old ski.... we drilled the bolt and put a cotter pin through and it would break the pin. it was a pita.

i think i determined that the scoring to the turnplate and/or base plate (from riding with it loose) was so bad the bearing things werent working/seating right. i've been better about keeping my new system tight all the time and havent had any problems. if either of yours are scored real bad that could be contributing.
