Too much contact cement?

I used about 2/3-3/4 of a 16oz can or weldwood on my under pad alone. Im just guessing that is too much. Will it cause any problems other then the fact i now need to buy more so i can turf?

My guess would be you just have a mess on your hands.

Be sure to apply the right amount of pressure per square foot. I used a hammer and 1' square board for that.

It wasnt too messy, just thick in most places, and some nice thin layers on my fingers... i used a 2" and 4" roller, a hammer with 2 layers of the thinner underpadding and a 1sq foot board to flatten it all down and get as much pressure on it as i could, it seems pretty strong, my only concern now is that the paint bubbled up in 2 places once i let the cement sit for a while, is that just poor prepping on my part or would it be because i used spray paint?

Also, how should i go about tapering the underpadding so it is flush with the ski? a better razor or can it be sanded or something?

Sand rubber padding? No.

I'd try cutting the padding .5" short of the end and see how it looks.

U tried using scissors to cut at an angle?

EDIT: I think your paint problem is unrelated.

to taper use a red hot razor blade and cut at your desired angle, then sand to shape... some people say you can use a right angle grinder with a sanding disc. Haven't tried that myself, but will give it a shot on my next turf job.

the paint problem occured after letting the cement sit and it is only where the cement is, i know the paint caused it, but im not sure why. I just hope its only the two little spots and the whole thing doesnt peel back on me.
Ill go try to smooth out the underpadding with a hot blade and see how that goes. I have a soldering iron with a exacto attachment somewhere i just thought of!

Please let us know how your pad cutting goes. I'm very interested in your results.

U think the fumes from the cement caused the bubbles? U didn't get an cement on the paint, did you?

my tray is painted then cemented over, the paint isnt seen but im worried about structure.

The pad cutting didnt go too bad. The heated exacto worked much better then a razor but it still wasnt easy just because if the angle i was trying to cut at. It cuts great though, slight sawing motion to keep it from binding up and it glides through the padding.
Heres a few pics

"Brush" i used to apply cement (thought i had one around the house so i didnt bother buying one, and i didnt feel like waiting now)

Did you turf over fresh paint?
I painted my tray atleast a week or two ago so i suppose its semifresh

yes, the pad can be sanded. Some of underpads sand better than others. You can probably get by with regular sand paper.

i cut it fairly even with the tool then used 150 grit paper to contour to the edge. It left alot of fibers but it helped smooth it some. Maybe ill try some 400 grit

You may want to sand the fresh paint off where your going to turf. Sounds like the paint you used and the dap have similar solvents and could cause adhesion issues.

If its true hydro-turf underpadding it should sand real easy.

Yes do what Endo said.. roughen up the smooth surface for better contact.

It sounds like your making the underpadding turf job harder than it is.. and its not that hard at all. If you think underpadding is difficult, quit now and let someone turf your ski that has done it before. Its not to hard either, just alot of patience of trial fit and applying the turf.

Yeah that cement is making my paint peel bad around the hood seal. I couldnt get it to stay down so i just locked my hood down on it so it can dry more then ill try applying more pressure later. The paint is just softening up and coming up in 1 sheet.

where can i get some weldwood? homedepot only has the green kind and i recall reading only get red. Im gonna check lowes tomorrow and pray they have it, if not is there any other type of store i should look before i order online?

And its official, i SUCK at installing hood seals... im gonna check it tommorrow but im pretty sure i made a nice mess. Luckily for me, white out is cheap and its only a 550!!

Do it twice?That's DooDoo
to cut turf nice use change to new razor blades very frequently....

and you can sand turf very easily (very quick to so be careful) with an angle grinder with a medium/fine sanding disc... sanding by hand doesnt give the same result although you can sand off some blemishes and such by hand

Well i slept till 3:30 today (not sure how...) and i gotta work at 5 so i wont make any progress...
I might stop at walmart and lowes when i go on break to try and find some weld wood then turf tomorrow.
