To much resin

First ever foothold install the other night. Looks like I used waaaaaay to much resin. Its thick, very thick. Wondering what the quickest way would be to uniformly knock it all down.

I hadn't considered lighting it on fire. Might just do the trick. Actually, I think I'm just going to get a cheap rasp plane from Harbor Freight tomorrow just to shape it, then sand finish.

I should also add the the bulk of the extra resin is in the tray. I tied the footholds together with fiberglass mat, hoping to strengthen the tray. I pretty much just poured the resin in the tray and spread it with a brush. I didn't realize how thick it was till it dried.

yea your just supposed to just wet out the cloth, using more than that will make it more likely to crack

I was having a tough time getting the cloth to stick, plus strands of glass kept pulling out with the brush. So I got frustrated and throughly saturated everything.

When applying resin to glass, use a stabbing motion not a brushing motion. It will help get the resin into the glass and also help by not pulling up as many strands. You only want enough resin on there to wet the cloth. No more. Also did you rough up the tray? I only glass to bare hull, not over paint or gel coat. and usually hit it with 80 grit before to promote adhesion.

Resin= Strength
Fiber= Flexibility

To much resin= no flexibility= cracks on impact.

The ideal setup is minimal resin as far as i know. Use a roller and just keep rolling the resin around as it soaks in. The roller will help spread it out plus absorb any resin that is extra. The more glass you get down the better. Resin will be strong, but will crack and break to easy, plus its way heavy compared to properly done glass

not true, the composite(combination) of resin and fiberglass is where the strength comes from.

Well I pretty much started from scratch today. Took a grinder with a 25 grit sanding disc to it. Took it off like butter but I still had to go at it for over half an hour (there is sooooo much dust in my garage) Resin was over a 1/4 in thick in certain places, I am retarded. Re-laid twice as much glass with a third the resin. Looks much better now. Gonna sand and turf later.

Sounds like you got it all worked out. It doesn't have to be that smooth for turf. Just knock down the ridges and sharp edges and you'll be good.

i was under the impression that there should only be enough resin to saturate the fibers. When i was glassing a sub box that molds to my trunk i used more resin then needed to saturate the fibers and it turned out super solid but brittle and very heavy. When i added a layer of glass to a wakeskate project im working on, i used a roller and soaked up any extra resin and it felt the same weight wise but was super flexible still.
