I let my buddy ride my superjet this weekend and the hood poped off when he fell. Upon further inspection my hood hooks loosened up. Oh yeah this was his first time on a standup. He thought it was going to the bottom. Funny thing is I have straps just havnt put them on yet:banghead:.We had it running in about ten minutes.

Had something similar happen...

I was showing off in front of a pontoon full of partiers (hot chicks) I was in the process of doing a sub and the hood flew off as the jetski entered the water. I somehow managed to grab the hood as it flew off with my left hand. The entire jetski was beneath the surface but the right tail-end. I held that up with my right hand. I wasn't going to let go of either so I kicked and yelled my f'ing head off. I believe I hyperventilated:rolleyes:

The pontoon boat did save us. We dragged it to shore and I got it running right away. Sorry, no pics.

Where is a good place to get some cheap, effective hood straps? I wasn't really worried about it because I am just learning but it scares me that I could lose my hood and my new ski. I don't have much money to play with after buyin my ski but I think I should do this so I don't get screwed while out ridin

I took IDOK's idea, I think it was his, and cut the straps from an old PFD... they already have the heavy duty plastic fastiners sewn in. Just cut them to the right lenth, and press in some grommets for the mounting bolts... and... hood straps.

walmart fabric section has the buckles and the nylon straps.

CHEAP.

double the end for an inch or so, then stick a hot soldering iron thru it, or a heated screw driver, for the size hole you want to bolt thru.

then use a large washer and bolt thru it.

easy cheap, and pretty strong.

sewing would be better, but IM not a girl, and I dont know how to sew.

I sewed mine with furniture thread and worked quite well. Supplies came from Wal-Mart. I learned to sew from my Mother. Both my parents taught me how to be self sufficient and I thank them for that.

There are some good threads on this board on how to make hood straps. Same thing kinda happened to me but with my handle pole. I broke my pole, but had the limiting rope sitting in my garage, I was just too lazy to put it on. Oh well.

The problem with the stock superjet latch is you can get it to unlatch if you press down hard on the hood. (even if you have it locked). In the surf, if you throw your boat away, the handle pole can come down with such force it will unlatch the hood.... you swim to your boat and take off, and if your lucky enough you will catch it before a wave does. THE SOLUTION... chris mac showed me this trick back when he raced for protec. Use a blaster seat latch for the hood latch. It is adjustable (you can really crank it down) so you can maintain a good seal, even after your rubber loses it's firmness.

The ratchet strap and blaster latch are both good ideas. The ratchet seems to be the most secure way I have seen to get it done so far. I am still using a normal latch and straps. And I can't tell you how many times the hood latch has come open on the FX, but with the straps tight, the hood will not move.

Bact to the ratchet though, Piere Maxient the world freeride champ does not even run a latch on the hood (or at least he was not using one when he was here) just a ratcht strap. And Ryan Johnson took that idea and did the same with good results. And Jerry also ran the square nose w/ out a latch on it as well...

I imagine that without the hood latch even the regular ratchet with the one inch webbing wouldnt really be any larger than the latch. I noticed stoyer was running a ratchet strap at Lanier. I dont remember if he was running a latch.
