Thinking of switching to total loss?

I am considering switching to total a MSD total loss system on my 98 SJ. Can someone give me pros and cons of doing this? I realize you loose your charging capabilities.

Lots of power, You can run more compression for maximum performance with a TL, Must use the new digital multi-channel MSD-TL, then with a new battery expect just to charge overnight after a days worth of riding, some things will need to be done on the setup if using in salt/surf. But overall a very good performance gain.
Did you already max out the 62T system with a TBM charging flywheel and a MSD Enhancer?

I have a Jetinetics charging flywheel and a MSD enhancer. But that does not matter same thing. I was just thinking of maybe trying out a type 9 pipe again and know they need more initial advance.

Unless you're one of those people who just want to ride until the engine falls apart and then finally open the hood to see what's wrong, you'll love total loss! Every hour and penny I put into my total loss systems has been well worth it. I typically go 2-3 tanks of fuel before charging (the entire weekend usually). No idea how long my battery will actually last though if I didn't charge it.

The setup sucks but like I said before...totally worth it.

Did you ever use a timing light and confirm the ignition timing?
Jetinetic's that I have used didn't have the timing right.

I have a MSD TL system that is a couple years old that I'm just setting up on a new stroker motor that I had built. You said "Must use the new digital multi-channel MSD-TL"...
What did you mean by that?
Could you elaborate?
So far, my motor seems to be running fantastic. Am I missing something?

And, I am going to be using the ski almost exclusively in salt water. What are the "some things" that I, or anyone else, needs to do on the set up?

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.

No analog crap, and no 1st generation single channel MSD is what I was referring to.
Only the Multi channel TLs is what you want to use with the two coils and not the single dual output coil.

What's so wrong with the single channel TL systems? All the things I've read from people who went from single to multi channel say they couldn't tell a bit of difference. I've also seen just as many multi channel brains go out as single channel.

I have to admit I like the looks of the ATP total loss. I like that you can use the oem box.

One man's opinion that is really not worth anything-

2 years ago I made the switch to MSD T/L.

I started off w/a complete 4270 analog system that worked great w/no issues. I sold the system to my neighbor and installed it on her SJ. I then installed a 42352 multi channel dig system on my ski with a RAD flywheel and external adjustable cover. Meanwhile the neighbors analog crap is still running fine-my multichannel dig box took a crap. I bought a new box from Summit for 418.00 shipped overnight air. I also installed another 4270 analog system on her B1 that is still running fine. As far as performance difference-the only thing I can find that is a MAJOR advantage of the new dig. box over the old analog is the start retard. I can tell no other difference other than that as far as my 'FEEL'. I personally know of 7 of the analog systems that have given ZERO issues. I now wish I had saved my money and stuck w/the old analogs. For the mass amount of $ I have in my dig system, I could have 4-5 analog systems and have plenty of backups sittin on the shelf in case 1 were to crap out!

Now for the moment of honesty-my neighbors 4270 crapped out this past weekend. She never maintains anything under the hood. I removed all the grounds off of the t/l plate ground post and cleaned all the green crap off of them and cleaned the post itself, added di grease and cranked the ski right up.

Now for setting up/installing t/l-

I prefer to use marine grade tinned wire from www.genuinedealz.com
I solder every single terminal and pin
I use gm weatherpack connectors on every last connection that is possilbe packed full of di-grease
I use sea doo starter solenoid kits w/the connector harness incl (42.00)
I smear all solder joints with 1211 and then install adhesive lined heat shrink over the soldered connections that don't go to pins. Heat shrink from www.genuinedealz.com
As for static timing-I set it, check it, and check it again several times.

I will NEVER own a ski w/o MSD t/l again. As for t/l in a oem box? NOT for me. I would rather have my stuff where I can spray it down w/ a little silicone spray when it's dry, get home from the lake-pop the hood off and let the system dry off on it's own.

This is the opinion of the Alabama gang and no one else I am sure. lol

No, I haven't used one of Chris's Flame ignitions.
From what I know about them, it should be a great ignition.

I am hoping so. I'll be installing one over the winter.

Gil: I just popped open my OEM ebox. It was bone dry. That's what I am after for the ATP ignition. I realize you can make the MSD TL work in salt, but the ATP should be easier to set up for that, considering that I ride salt 50% of the time - and I live 320 miles from the ocean!
Once I move there, it will be damn near 100%, and I need good reliability for that.
