Super Jet Thinking of Painting my SJ. Any Ideas?

Boris

The Good Old Days
Not everyone is concerned about how fast or powerful their ski is. Just like cars. Just because it has a paint job, doesn't mean they are a race car.
A lot of people are concerned with show more than go.

A bit rude to think that everyone would focus on moding thier ski before making it look good.

OK grasshopper.
Paint that ski all purdy like only to find out days later that you should have modded that stock hood.
Whatever floats your boat but before you commit to a color, make sure you aren't omitting an important step.

I wasn't trying to start a slug fest.

I'm aware that there are mods that can be done prior to paint so as to not ruin paint. I have 2 SN skis and both are getting the hoods hacked up so that i can redo the liner and keep water out. However, if someone is not doing subs are carving really hard, than there is no reason for them to do those mods as it won't be an issue for the riding style. Same goes for Tubbies. You can put them on prior to paint and then paint them to match the ski so that it's a far cleaner looking ski when the paint dries, but again if it's not an aggressive rider who is satisified with the ski as is, than there's no reason for that either.

My statement was directed at Boris, not for what he said, but how he said it. I took it as saying "well there's no point in painting your ski because you haven't done X,Y & Z yet." Where as I agree that perhaps X,Y & Z are worth doing, it doesn't mean that everyone needs to do it.

If it were phrased something like "you should think about doing X,Y & Z before you paint your ski" it gives are far more constructive vibe to it.

I think people get stuck in their ways more than they realize and don't necessarily take others thoughts and goals into consideration.

Ok i've said my peace.
If you're going to tear into it, that's fine.

Hell, I have no plans of tearing into anything.
This is just the interweb after all.

I may not be all "PC" and shait (I despise fake smiles and PC crap that I encounter everyday in real life), but I would hate to see another guy get all paint happy only to find out that he should have done a few NECESSARY mods first. We've seen it quite a few times in the past.
Aggressive rider or not, those air intakes need to go on every SN hood.

They are pretty bad no argument there. Which is exactly why I am doing it to my skis prior to paint.

Sorry to be a buzz kill but not a lot of people know how to react to criticism over the web. most get their panties in a wod and cry about it.

(Boris) What's done to your SN?

Wow..lol I just got back from class to see this. Well first off I have mild things done to the ski most of which is motor mods. Yes that is a stock hood and I am new with SJ's so I did not know about the hood being a big problem. Yes I will have to change that. Is there anything else I need to know before I start paint? Here in Michigan we have at least 5 months of down time between seasons so I figured I would paint the ski during this time because I didn't want to do it during the season and have to have my ski out for a few weeks. Like I said I am a newb and all information is much appreciated because I would like to do things right then having to go back and redo it again.

search superjet hood mod.

ultimately you cut out the OEM liner of the hood. Seal up the vents on top of the hood and the 3 holes on each side of the front. Cut new air intakes at the rear of the hood, and put a new liner in. some do it with fiberglass. I've seen a thread where a fiberglass reinforced plastic was used that was glassed into place. This would also be a good time to cut in some hand holds if you're into freestyle at all.

I think that's pretty much the quicky version.
any other details gents?

Perfect! Thanks man! This will help out a lot and I have a buddy that does glass so looks like I will be talking to him about this. I am pretty sure he has done his girls so I am sure he will be able to do this. I would like to put some hand holds in there but not even close to having that much ride time..lol But one day it will come. I am more focused on freestyle as of now. Again I thank you!

go to home depot. and in the rattle can section there is apliance epoxy paint that come in a rainbow of colors. (black, white, and almond) its 5 bucks a can and the stuff is bullit proof.sprays on thick and self levels like glass if you apply each coat within a half hour. you could paint your whole ski for under 50$ no clear needed. i just sprayed my bpipe today and it looks like candy.

USE EPOXY RESIN IF YOU WANT IT TO STICK AND STAY! polyester doesn't bite into other glass and/or SMC like epoxy. it can be done but not worth the chance. depending on how you do your hood liner cutting in holds is easy. would be glad to help walk you through it if you like.

Good to know, thanks

it's your ski, do as you wish. It's a bit over played in my opinion, but if you like it, make it happen.

That is what I was thinking also. I found a paint that I really liked and think I am going to go with this:
http://www.tcpglobal.com/hokpaint/hok-marblizer.aspx

It is the Green colored one. I would like to do most of the ski in that color but then do some kind of graphic or something to break the color a little.

If you spend more than $20 on the shiny stuff than you've spent too much.

Paint doesn't give you more power.

this is true . . . but some people like to take pride in what they ride and what they do. i use the good shiz on all my skis, destroy it, then do it again. i love doing it its in my nature and it gives me something to do over the winter, as if i need another project around here.

But squares are meant to be beat up.
Leave the fancy paint for those RN fellers, they need all the help they can get.
