SXR maintenance

So I have an 07' SXR and I run it NONSTOP every weekend of the summer on Lake Michigan. Its got to have a million hours on it. Its a stock machine with absolutely nothing done to it other than a mat.

I want to put some engine mods on it but my dad and I have no idea what were doing (I'm only 17). So I was wondering before I winterize around Labor day..what can I do to better maintain the engine or just make it run harder/better?

I lost my manual otherwise I would use that but I keep it on a jetdock all summer long so it makes it difficult to work on.

Creative RE Purchasing
A pretty simple hop up without making major modifications is to do a timing advance, and then possible re jetting the carbs to accommodate, and then sending out the stock impeller to IMPROS to be repitched and cut back.

I did these mods on my SXR and I felt a difference that satisfied me all season long.

But there are other SXR guys here that will probably have a better answer than me. I haven't owned an SXR for about 2 years now.

As long as it is stock it should run for a LONG time!

As far as mods go. Start off with footholds, zero degree bars, bilge pump and block off the front airhole in your hood. (cut a 2nd one in the back)

For your motor: Start by boring the nozzle, getting the flywheel lightened and the head milled over the winter. (LPW or Group K can do all of these cheap) These will keep you reliable, but you'll have to switch to 93 octane. Doing a jump for the timing advance will be next. Thats all I would do the first year. It will keep you super reliable and you don't need to touch your carbs. You'll notice signifigant gains on the low end!

Next is the wet pipe and thats the big gain, but you will have to rebuild every other year do to stress on the crank. (Kawi cranks only last so long!)

Maintenance: Over the winter, fog your motor. I would also cut back your spark plug wires one inch. (The ends burn up after a lot of hours on it) Just pull off the plug caps and cut em.

Maybe pull the carbs, open em up and clean em up real good with carb cleaner and reassemble. (I only do this every 3 years or if I take in water)

how much would all that cost, korn?

yeah thanks a lot thats the main thing..reliable. I want low end power but something where i don't have to tinker with the engine after every ride.

same with zerfman, how much does all that stuff cost? and do i have to tear apart my ski to get to those parts?

I'd call shop that's specialize in SXR's. Like JSU, Ulimate, or Jet World. They can all design a package to fit your budget. When modding a ski all the parts have to work together to give you the best preformance.
DJ can say what he wants but my 03 dry piped SXR is still on the orignal OEM crank.

2 strokes love an expansion chamber it allows it to run properly, you will love it too,if you wanna stay reliable just stay away from big compression hikes, top end mod's are not linear but by the square,if you dont get it right you just generate more heat=engines worst enemy, keep it simple and enjoy it......unless ya got a fat wallet then "%*! it.....just rip n wrench!
