Snowmobiles?.? WTF?.?

I was talking with my bro yesterday and we kinda came to the conclusion that Malone can't really be running a snowmobile engine. If he is:

A. Where is the pull start (you know, with a rope and handle)?
B. How did he get a coupler on the crank? (they are belt driven with a centrifical (sp.) clutch?
C. How did he get water to run through it to cool it?
D. Wouldn't the porting be totally f'd for a pwc?

etc. etc. etc.

I think he might be runnin a bike motor, but it is doubtful a snowmobile engine would be possible at all. It is probably just a polaris couch motor.

I don't know much about snow mobiles but my brothers smobile has a push button start/stop switch.

I just read thread about a 550 hull with a snowmobile engine in it earlier on pwct.

yeah many of the new ones have electric start and liquid cooling.

It can be done, a motor is a motor. Snowmobiles use water for cooling also. My old snowmobile redlined at something like 11,000rpms so I would love to ride a ski with a Polaris motor in it. I immagine he used the RMK motor.

What about the centrifical clutch? How do you get a coupler on there.. It's designed completely different. Even if they have electric start, they still have a pull start on em.

Take the clutch off and you have the crank looking at you.

As mentioned, someone with some skill and lots of cool tools could make a coupler fit it.

The water routing could prolly be done also, but I wouldnt know how to do it.

I just wanted to answer the questions the best I can:

A: Most new motors use electric start, and only the pull start for a backup
B: Take the clutch and pully system off and your left with just about the same thing as a jetski motor (ie: My old 1979 Kawasaki intruder/invader 440. Intruder was aircooled, invader was liquid... They look basicaly the same to a 440jetski motor)
C: A lot skis now days are liquid cooled, you would just hook them up to the pump as you would with your stock motor, now keeping or ditching the motor's waterpump is up to you as well...
D: I would think so yes, because a seld is built to run at high RPMs, where as a freestyle ski your looking for botom end punch... BUT I have no idea, and so someone else will have to answer that one..

A motorcycle motor would work too... but then again depending on what motor it is, is where your powerband lays....

Dj,

Snowmobile cylinders...

CGracing's buildoff boat you saw in person was a Polaris XC800 top end. With custom mounting hardware and TL ignition (not pull start ;) )

Its doable, but LOTs of custom fabbing. Oh and Ps, rode CG's boats the last two weekends. BRAApppp thing rips for a snowtoy

King, Whats with the shut your mouth comment? I am absolutely impressed with CG's boat and was not ripping on it in any way. He must have put twice the work into his ski that I put into mine. I am an old school snowmobile rider and am just blown away by the amount of work it must take to make this work. I just recently saw some snowmobile engines in my brothers shop and was truely interested (and confused) in the how the hell you could put that motor in a ski.

After looking at another thread, I see that CG combined an Octane and a snowmobile motor to make one bad mofo.

My question is still, how did Malone run an entire snowmobile motor or is it a PWC/Snowmobile hybrid, also? (just lookin for info gentlemen)

I don't know what he ran, just heard rumors. My guess is he didn't run the entire snowmobile motor, just cases, jugs, a "short block ". He would have to modify the drive shaft, remove the pull starter since most come with electric and pull starter, change carbs, change exhaust, and remove water pump.

Malone runs a bottom end of a polaris octane motor with polaris snowmobile power valve cylinders that have been bored out to make 1000CC.
With some custom work of course.

I talked to the guys at wamiltons. I went riding down in West Palm Beach and stopped by their shop. Super nice guys, showed me their shop and BS with them for quite a bit.
