Snapped motor mount bolt

I guess there aren't many worse ones to snap. So I have about 3/8 of an inch exposed. I measured out with another bolt and I have about 6.5 turns left and a vice grip won't do it. I have a buddy who says he can grind it down, drill it, and tap it. I've also heard some machine shops can weld a bar to it and use that to try and spin it the rest of the way out. Any tips?

PS: this was bought new in 05 and I thought I was being careful (slow w/regular lube) :frown:

easy out might be a pain... especiallly with a SS bolt. If you have a welding connection have them tack a nut on the exposed bolt and then you can wrench it out.

is this the bolt in the mount? Like you can pull it out and use a drill press on it?
Drill it out as close as you can to the root of the tread then use a screw extractor.

The bolt is in the insert in the hull. I like sjkny's suggestion as it seems the least destructive. I'll try working it back in and out again and hopefully not kill those threads or spin the insert :27:

no, it IS a pain. One of my motor mount bolts snapped off clean at the hull, Z out was HARD. Took me a few hours... crappy!

This may be a stupid question, but what do you do when you bust that motor mount? Grind the bolt and drill it out? Or will the jbweld break before the mount? ...not that I plan on doing this!

Beachjunky..

I posted in another thread that I went through this last week with my '04. The same thing, about 3/8 inch above the insert was showing. We tried the easyout/reverse thread method, it was a pain with the stainless bolt. We drilled all the way through the center of the bolt, and sprayed lube down it, to enter from the top and bottom. It still wouldnt budge. So we ended up drilling it out (we didnt want to break the easyout off in there, they are even harder to drill out. and there was not enough bolt left to weld to.)

I would recommend first trying to weld a nut onto the top of the broken bolt, if this doesnt work. Dont even bother easyout (it was a waste of 2 hours), just drill and tap.

Will regular steel weld okay to the stainless? I know nothing about welding except that my buddy is not setup for stainless...

I don't know what easyout is either but it sounds like I don't need to know

EZ outs suck, mine always break off. I snapped a bolt on the intake manifold, easy out broke...So now I just drilled all the way through and through-bolted it. Too bad that wont work for an engine mount.

Man...I have got to start using my torque wrench on EVERYTHING.

So the machine shop is afraid the heat will damage the glass or the insert in the glass.... Here's a pic. The nut would go down a little further. I'm probably making a bigger deal out of it than it really is. Thanks for all yall's support.

Their right. It will easily melt and possibly cause damage, I can weld and thought the same exact thing.

Im tellin you, drill a hole, and get it out with an extractor. itll be a pain in the ass, but it'll come out. Be patient and careful not to strip anything any worse than it is.

Yep. Drilled it and extracted it. I'm surprised I didn't hyperventilate... Worked the other four bolts out over 40minutes. Lots of corrosion but I only have 30 hours or so on this boat (all salt water but always hosed down). Chased all the inserts with a tap. Should I use antiseize when I put the new mounts on? Thanks again everyone.
