Slutty Mod Hood Question

I am glassing in the liner tonight.

I lowered the stock hood (cut about 2" off the top, old top vent area) I'm thinking I may need a couple more breathers due to the lower air volume capacity.

Does it matter how long the breather tubes are? Should they go deeper into the hull than the FA sits, to prevent water suckage? Or can they be short (like 6")

I'm thinking of running 4, 1 1/2" tubes. 3 over the battery area (close together), 1 closer the the E box on other side of carb.

Any other routing ideas? Where to place breather tubes?

Thanks. I have pics of the hood but not uploaded onto a computer yet.

I'd make them go just about the the bottom of the hull. Best place would be 2 tubes that go between gastank & motor.

I did 2 of the 2" blue/black pool hose tubes from Lowes. One is near the pipe chamber and the other is near the battery. You don't want much more than that or you'll have a hard time getting them in their place when putting the hood on. If you glue them in at just the right angle and the holes are in the right place, it won't be an issue.

I don't mind wiggling the hoses in. My OEM hood setup was rather picky. Not sure if the previous owner screwed with it or not.

I'll work in a few somehow.

I ride in lakes, usually flatwater, but we get some wavy days with good rollers, and it turns into a more of a freeride.

So the tubes should go to the bottom of the hull instead of a few inches down?

I am having a problem with a stock square hood. I put a dual carb setup on, and now the vent tube that is mid was on the hood hits the stock OEM 38mm FA. There is no rubber breather tube on that one, and I even had to trim about 1/2" off the tube that is part of the hood liner that the rubber breather tubes connect to. I'm just running it like that until after a camping trip next month. Then I'm gonna either do the slutty hood mod like I should, or just real quick move the existing breather tube to another location.

BE SURE to reinforce the sides of the hood before putting in the new liner. The sides of the hood are very weak and the new liner postion kinda makes it weaker. You should not need to put in more than the 2 hoses even if you made the volume of the hood smaller.

On a different squarenose hood I had, I cut that hose's flange off flush and glassed it flat across to clear the dual OEM flame arrester. The 1 OEM air hose actually flows enough air by itself.

Here's my squarenose mod gallery. I did not reinforce the insides of the hood and should have. Also did not think enough about the hose placement (1 rubs the pipe & gastank)

I would run one between the motor and fuel tank and one rear of the carbs by the exhaust pipe.... make sure the tube goes to the very top w/o blocking air and all the way to the bottom (just short). this will give you the most protection against water intrusion

Done. Put 1 between the motor and the gas tank, and the other right near the battery but angled so if water dumps in it will pour down between the battery and the tank. Seems like this will work just fine.

Sledhead - Thanks for the pool hose!

I do have pics and am continuing to take pics through my build.

Once I get the boat in teh water and I ride it, I'll compile a thread under buildoffs or my ski. I plan to finish it this or next week.

don't let the tubes go all the way to the bottom. if you sub your ski and it takes on water then the tubes will be underwater and your ski won't be able to breath until your scuppers drain the water.
