Skill level to try backflip

If you don't let go and the ski lands upside down on you with you holding on... will it push you under the water? What do you do if you are upside down, and your feet slip out of the footholds and you panick and can't get the feet back in?

Ive landed with my hands on the grips, feet straight down and the ski directly overhead. I was pushed under with no problems and flipped my next wave.

don't let go. You may see some get off footage of joe kenny bailing on flips. you are not joe kenny. Hang the :):):):) on.

Yes you go relatively deep in the water so make sure you've got at least 5-6 feet of water. I did slip out in one of my attempts and unless you're going really big, you don't have enough time to really panic. You have enough time to realize that you slipped and you're in the water. I did catch the pole in my stomach on that attempt but it was more like someone pushing on my stomach than a hit.

Hell yeah, I'm watching old videos to get myself pumped for my weekend in the surf, starting Friday.

my first one i pancaked upside down broke every mount and a set of couplers and had a smile from ear to ear because i just learnt how easy they would be and that i was not gonna get hurt i went out the next day after replacing the broken stuff and flipped first wave
as far as bailing wipe the thought out of your head just hold on you wont be high enough on the first one worry about bailing

ill never forget my backflip attempts, ive only properly landed one, so you dont ahve to listen to me but my advice witch i have been given by some mates and awsome riders .

1st. never bail, just hold on and let the ski push you through the water rather then land on you.

2nd. approach wave at underplane speed , slower you start off the easier it is.

3rd. hang but out a little bit and start to pull at bottom of the wave while getting on the gass, (dont be a skirt and reef that throttle in).

4th. hitting the wave late as possible is a main key factor to help you spin around. its it just befor eit breaks.

5th. lean back, hold on and pinnpoint your landing . feels sketchy first time seeing the land the wrong way up. jus member DONT BAIL. ( it helps to practice on land doing backflips to get used to the idea of upside down)

6th. land nose in a lil just like a stab and easier said the done but ride away.

lol, not many people can do backflips on dry land. All my friends are to scared to do that. I think I'm the only one that can actually do it.

The biggest thing I have learned from diving (1 and 3 meter springboard) is don't give up once you committe. When you puss out half way through something is when you get hurt.

my question was geared to how do i know skill-wise if i'm ready?

Woody you’re ready when YOU feel you’re ready. For me there was a point where I wanted to do one sooo bad but would back out at the last minute and then later after my ride I would be pissed at myself for not trying it. From that point on I wasn’t happy with myself every time I rode until I finally stepped up and tried it. Backys took me about 5 or 6 attempts before I started getting all the way around.

I'll admit to that myself. Except there is a much smaller window of oppurtunity when riding flatwater and when you approach that one wake that is much larger than normal and you get intimidated, it's 10x worse because you may have blown your only chance for the day/week.
