Shortest Turn Plate You'll Ever See

Well, I finally picked up the ball where mouth dropped it. Spent all day on this baby and I think it's pretty cool.

I used tubing that was too thin, but I'm gonna chance lossing an eye tomorrow and try it anyway. I've got the right size on order - it's .875 OD X .125 wall thickness.

Cost me about, $24 for the tube, $2 for the plate, and some time. I used my drill-press to punch the holes. I found an endmill that was just the same size as the UMI pivot hole, so that made that part easy. I also found a countersink that was huge to do the clamp holes. I cut the rough shape of the plate on a band saw and then finishied it up with a belt sander. Finally I beadblasted the entire thing to give it uniform texture.

I did have one hic-up, I drilled the clamp holes so close to the pivot hole that I had to sand a little divot in the handlebars, which of course could make them weaker and more apt to break there.

This first one was kind-of an experiment to see if I like this better or not, I'll designing the next one with more clearance, however . . . What if you put two clamps on each side and moved it up by the pivot point?

This one is about 2 - 2.5 inches shorter than my blosion one I think. I also made the handle bars 25 inches long, which is 1 inch longer than my UMIs.

This with my pole puts me somewhere around -7 inches on the whole enchilada. Hands clearance of the hood id fine and could probably go at least another inch closer.

I just purchased the pipe and an extra turn plate to do the same thing. But I am going to build it with a stock turn plate. I have some extra pip for sale if anyone wants to build there own. The pipe I got is super thick. This is what I bought I can cut it to what ever length you want I want to try 28 inches.

I will share pictures as soon as I get mine built but I have a motor to build before Riot ride so all my time is invested there.

Here is what I have
Alloy 6063 Aluminum Round Tube .875" Od, .437" Id, 8' Length

Speedfreak, I might be interested in buying some of that extra tube . . . How much for 30 inches shipped?

I was using a band saw blade for fine wood veneers and it was sort of a B!+@# to use. The blade was so flexible that it was very hard to follow a line. Therefore, I had to cut it big and sand it down. I've got 2 different Delta belt/disc sander combos and different roughness pads, so it's not hard to finish something out, but it would be faster to cut it to "spec" from the get-go. I could also drill some of the holes where two lines meet to get a perfect corner.

Last night I bought a soft metal blade and man did it work better - much more control. When I did the initial UMI pivot hole I punched 3 different blanks - so I've got 2 to go. I'm supposed to be re-assembling a GP1300R this morning, but I'm very tempted to stray here. :sneaky: :sneaky: :sneaky:

I'm pretty sure I could make the UMI clamps . . . and I could make them like 1.5 - 2 inches wide, so that you could literally mount them beside the bearing - like sport-bike motorcycle bars. You'd have to do something with the steering ball, but you could shorten stock steering up like 4 inches just by changing the turn-plate.

I'm not sure what shipping would be but how does $20 sound shipped for a 30 inch piece. That should cover shipping.

Let me know if that sounds good.

Looks great. What thickness aluminum did you use? I copied Mouth's setup on mine. I've had a piece of 3/8 alum. sitting in my garage for a few weeks. Since it's warmed up enough to get on the water I haven't had much motivation to work on anything.

I used exactly the same thickness as a UMI. I took it to the place with me and found the same thickness.

As a matter of fact I used the UMI as a template also - basically what I made is a copy of the UMI just way shorter.

I broke the handlebar today. I rode for about 15 minutes and it broke where I had grinded it down. I've got the other turnplate I mentioned earlier. It's almost ready, but I think I need tougher tubing.

I read mention in the other posts about filling the tube with epoxy . . . what's that all about?

Speedfreak, when could you ship that tube out?

Almost forgot to mention that I really liked the way it felt . . . can't wait to really romp on one that's tougher.

Hey dude send me your address and I will cut it and get it in the mail tomorrow after noon. I can ship it priority so it should be there by wednesday.

And looking at this stuff it is super thick compared to the umi bars.
