Shin splints....

Anyone suffer from shin splints?
mine have been killing me for a while
I got fitted for proper running sneakers and supports, but because i think the shins are so strained i haven't been able to run
i've been walking a little bit, but after a few days of that i have the problem of PAINFUL shin splints
i did some web searching on it, and they say time off is the only cure
i LOVE running, but i think 2 years ago when i started running again, thats when the pain started, and of course me being the typical dumb male kept running through the pain, until last year its gotten so bad i couldn't.
i also used to jump rope alot, and one some sites they say that is bad, so not sure if that contributed to the damage as well
, but never bothered me when i was jumping rope. i was using proper form, like a boxer would
as an alternate, i just a recumbent bike to sit my fat a$$ on when i watch TV now, so for the next few months, that, the UBE, and spin bike will be my forms of exercise

It's been bothering me for a good 13 years now, off and on.
I'll get into running, and after a couple of months I get terrible shin splints. I'd have to quit running for a few months for it to go away.
This past summer, I started running barefoot after reading about some of the touted benefits. That was the first time that I didn't develop shin splints. The downside is that can't just run barefoot anywhere you want. Running on a track is impossible, it'll give you blisters in no time.

I coach hgh shool track and it's usually a sign of a shoe problem, technique issue, lack of warm-up, or just overuse. I started a high knee running, skipping warm-up and cut our shin problems to zero.. I keep a close on of the teams rnning technique.

Yes! I used to get them in high school when I was way into tennis. Haven't gotten them from skiing thankfully!

Get a Mountain Bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use to get them when I played softball. Painfull. Another reason I dont run.

2nd.

I use to run... A LOT! I could run a month on, couple weeks off until my shin splints were gone. Always had good shoes...

Have since switch to Mountain biking. Cover more distance and be more adventures this way as well.

I still do enjoy running around a track though with the rubber surface... seems to help some.

You get used to it.
I started out on grass, then threw in a lap or two on a track, then road/sidewalk.

I will have to take a look at the pose thing
there is also a nice high school here that has this AWESOME track, but its locked down
its not asphalt or clay, but it felt sort of spongy and was brownish in color. i was like yeahhhhhhh until they kicked us out
no tresspassing.....

I could have an issue with technique as well, and probably my fat a$$ isn't helping it much
i did get the new Magnum recumbent bike in last night
so with tonights Cavs/Heat game i will pedal away nice and comfy...

I've thought about mountain biking, but right now i just ride my BMX around....

I also read that shin splints can be caused by fractures in the legs....

I went and got fitted for running shoes at roadrunner sports. they custom made an insert after having me on a treadmill and scanner. they put me in a neutral+ because of the high arches in my foot. I've been trying to locate a podiatrist locally so i'll see what that brings.
i wonder if marathon type of shoes would be better.
that bare foot thing got me thinking, when i walk barefoot or even in the slipper shoes, i don't seem to feel as much pain.

baths with epson salt help, and so does Motrim's, but i dont want that as the solution...

now if i can only find a shoulder specialist here to get fixed up... i can seriously get back to where i was before the crash

Power and Agility
Running in minimalist shoes(adidas sambas, converse chuck taylor, spikeless track shoes)or barefoot with correct technique will prevent foot/ankle injuries. I highly recommend the vibram five fingers(same thing as barefoot) as they allow you to go barefoot with only a bit of protection from rocks and glass.

Big thing is to ease into barefoot running if your coming from a heeled shoe. Otherwise, your achilles and the rest of your calves will be inflamed for days. Google barefoot drills and do those everyday along with increasing mileage when running by 5-10%(and im not advocating long distance crap) from where you first start off. If you were used to running 2 miles in padded shoes, I would highly advise 1/2-3/4 of a mile to start until your body is ready to advance.

Lastly, start massaging and stretching your calves on a daily basis. Tennis ball, lacrosse ball, w/e it takes to keep the soft tissue under control. Use AIS(active isolated stretching google for technique) for your lower leg muscles before exercise and postworkout. You should see great results within weeks of adhering to this protocol. We overuse are lower leg muscles without proper recovery, and this an easy way of taking care of them.

When I played soccer in high school I would suffer some shin splints and my coach painfully jammed his thumbs in the front of my shins and said he was working them out. After the swelling went away they were better.
