well one thing I can tell you not to try is a JSS rebuilt coil.We have a few of them here in VA and they all ground out in salt water. John swears that others he have sold work for salt water riders,but im sorry thats just BS.
A good ride is too important to miss because of a used coil,IMHO its well $ spent buying a brand new oem coil,that way if something is still going wrong you KNOW you can rule out the coil.

very true with the cdi compared to a new one,but id just as well buy a new coil and not have to change it out on the beach,I rather be riding for those 20min plus the 10 min slow wake in and out most places.....40 min wasted

True,with most other parts,but since the coil is the prob A HUGE % of the time,I just think its better to buy a new one,so it DOESNT just break right in the middle of a session.

while we are on the subject,what has been you guys experience with yami copper coils vs the more expensive fiber coils with built on boots of the b2

spare electrical parts are priceless for salt riders.....
and changing out a coil on the beach is nothing....I rember seeing JR doing a motor swap at sebby one year :notworthy:

A ton of us here tried the JSS coils with the msd boots,and they all grounded out in the salt water......I just dont understand it. put in a new coil and FLAWLESS.
so no experience with the fiber core coils?

I don’t really understand how a coil can ground out from salt water it is sealed and the plug wires are sealed in the coil case and the coil is in the electrical box. Sounds like there may be other issues other than the coil.

i think most of the time its at the connection of the boot--wire
plus when the coils get old the wires will break inside of the sheathing.....
when it happens though, its plain as day.....
the boat will run great dry, but breakup as soon as saltwater hits it........If you run it on the trailer in the garage with lights off its a freakin' fireworks show!

Mark,the coil itself doesnt ground out,its the wires and boots that ground out,salt water is a MUCH better conductor than fresh water.
Best test is spray the wires down with a mister bottle with salt water in it,in the garage at night,you will see everyplace it is grounding out.
I just dont understand how these msd boots and thicker wires jss is using is failing when its BRAND NEW. they LOOK twice as nice as oem,great concept but crappy performance. If it had only been one or maybe even 2 you would wonder if they were just bad ones.But we got a bunch at one time for most of the group and everyone failed right off the bat in the surf

Actually, the stuff I am running is all stainless. I put that setup together. But, It is basically the same thing as the JSS which is (or was not) stainless.
The problem I found is that the elec box case + the "hot" stud is too close together and you get electrolysis between the two. I actually used Spark plug wire grommets for the pass throughs (you cannot buy the Battery cable passthroughs seperatley) which made the problems worse. The spark plug wire grommets put the stuff even closer to the grounded case.
I still like the design but the electrolysis problem needs to be dealt with. All it needs is more distance. After all the Kawi elec box does not have the electolysis probs.
