My Bendix decided it was time to grenade and lock up my engine at 6000 rpm.

The starter, flywheel, stator, front crank seal, case, front cover and bushings all appear okay. :fingersx:

I burned about a 1/4 tank of fuel and came back did some quick jetting changes. I took the ski back out on a couple quick rpm burst and the engine completely locked up with a loud grinding bang noise right before the bridge.

At first I thought my engine just threw a rod but when I hit the start button again it just spun with no mechanical connection. Then I knew almost instantly what had happened. :261:

It was an OEM bendix from my 2003 SuperJet and what the hell would cause this to happen?

Is it possible the clutch stayed engaged open and centrifugal force caused it to explode?

I think that's what happened to mine. The spring with the weights gets weak and finally explodes. The pieces make the bendix stay open.

Just a WAG, of course.

Why are you not running a lightened flywheel?

I'll blame not wearing glasses.

In any event, you did get lucky that not more was broken.

Now, disabling your ride within the first tank of getting to a ride -> I've been there more times than I care for, and it sucks.

Also anyone using 3M 5200 to glue a front bilge pump in, I would highly recommend making one of these aluminum brackets to mount your pump.

It stays in place with the two screws for the gas tank rubber wedge and can easily be removed

I machined that piece out of an engine shim after seeing the ones Jet Ski Solutions was selling.

The Jet Ski Solution ones have a 4-degree adjustment in both directions and the ones I made have a fixed position with 2-degrees advanced.

yes you did!

I had one come apart with a jetinetics in there once......mangled, destroyed and unusable

you most likely had water intrusion before....the spring got rusty and lets go..

..I have had 2 of those things go just like that..

you too? I had one DESTROY my rad flywheel a couple years ago. Some things brand new oem actually pays... so I've learned.

The water drops in the front cover are from me washing the engine down with the front cover partially open after the Sebby ride.

I don't see any rust inside the bendix; I had it soaked in WD-40 before it was installed.

I'm going to disassemble everything under the front cover today, to try and remove all those metal debris before something else gets damaged.

I had a bendix stick on and it grenaded like that, but it ruined my stator, flywheel, bushing, starter, and starter relay. You got lucky!

Bet it was your start relay that caused it, I had mine keep cranking the motor when I shut it off, it keeps the bendix engaged. You can't tell until you shut it down, has to do with low battery voltage and the contacts arcing.

always inspect the little tabs that seperate the magnets. They are knowned to break and often results the spring breaking and a catastrophic end for the bendix
