I am about to put my newly-rebuilt pump back on my 1990 SJ (new concord and all :Banane01: ), and have a brand new rubber "packing" gasket to go in between the wear ring and the shoe mating area. I was going to lightly coat the mating edge of the packing with some good waterproof grease to ensure a solid seal. I note that even with the packing there will still be a significant gap between the wear ring and the shoe - does one just leave this open? Would it cause much drop in performance? I previously had put good silicone sealant in there, but it was an old packing and it didn't matter to me. Now I would like to keep the packing in good shape, and also save the time of siliconing the gap if it doesn't make a diff.
Please advise whaat folks do here. and thanks
