Sealant between pump and shoe?

I am about to put my newly-rebuilt pump back on my 1990 SJ (new concord and all :Banane01: ), and have a brand new rubber "packing" gasket to go in between the wear ring and the shoe mating area. I was going to lightly coat the mating edge of the packing with some good waterproof grease to ensure a solid seal. I note that even with the packing there will still be a significant gap between the wear ring and the shoe - does one just leave this open? Would it cause much drop in performance? I previously had put good silicone sealant in there, but it was an old packing and it didn't matter to me. Now I would like to keep the packing in good shape, and also save the time of siliconing the gap if it doesn't make a diff.

Please advise whaat folks do here. and thanks

you need to figure out why you have a gap there... don't just fill it.
If I remember correctly the manual doesn't say to put anything on that seal. The pump should seal tightly to the pump shoe w/o any type of sealant.....

Agreed with slut, you shouldn't have a gap once the pump is pushed all the way in so the boltholes line up.

Hmmm, gotta think this one over....

The gap (inside the pump, not outside, btw) was there before I ever pulled the pump for the first time.

Now Im trying to figure out, if the little solid bumps on the top of the wear ring meet up with the holes in the underside of the hull and there's still a gap, then what on earth could be off? The wear ring is going to sit where it is regardless of the midshaft or driveshaft orientation. The only possible item that could be 'off' and cause the gap (if its indeed not supposed to be there) is the shoe itself. Seems the shoe fits pretty good, so Im confused now.

I recently installed a new pumpshoe and I'm interested in seeing what you are talking about.

One of my biggest concerns when I was putting everything together was that it wouldn't fit when I was done. Thankfully, all went well.

it sounds like maybe you have left the rubber seal out for the pump

I certainly hope you're not referring to me because the start of my thread says I have the rubber packing in there, brand spankin new. If you are talking about some other part please let me know.

I'll try to get a pic or two up on here later, but all I have to do it with is my cell picture phone right now :-( May not be good pics.

Confirm this for me - the flat side of the seal goes towards and on the lip of the wearring, the "split" (sort of) side goes towards the face of the pump shoe or the boat itself...

Also, and just throwing this out there - you aren't speaking from a round nose experience are you? This is a square, 1990.

The pump is the same...:27:

Everything lines up great - just that once its bolted up theres a small gap all the way around inside at the mating point of the wear ring/pump shoe. The rubber packing is in there, but there's still room to put maybe a 1/4" bead of silicone inside the pump (the packing diameter is bigger than the hole). I just didn't know if it would affect performance, but now I'm told it shouldnt be there at all!

I hope I'm using my terminology correct here.

You mean to tell me, when you put just the wear ring on, with the packing inbetween the wear ring and its mating surface on the pump shoe (no stator, impeller, or driveshaft), you can reach into the wear ring area inside and there is absolutely no gap at the forward-most edge of the wear ring?

If thats the case, then the only thing that can be wrong (from what I know) is that the pump shoe part is set too deep into the fiberglass body area? And if its bolted up to the transom, then I just can't see how that could be. wtf.
