SBt crank vs Hotrods

Location
oregon
I need a crank and was considering buying an sbt or a hotrods. The sbt is cheaper and they have a special for free shipping right now. but i know a lot of people have said bad things about them in the past. but i have also heard good things as well. does anybody have the facts as to why one crank would be better then the other?

no definitive answer can be had on which is statistically better, as the exact parts are kept secret. However, the SBT cranks are fine IMO, I'm running one in one of my skis. I would use a hot rods only if I was running high enough compression to need higher then 93 octane or something else that would cause high stress or an expensive engine that the extra money spent would comfort me.

However, SBT has a warranty, and 99.9 percent of the time its great service (except warranty claims require you to pay shipping).

Why would you purchase a rebuilt, reguardless of rebuilder, when you could purchase brand new for less than $100 more??

I put a Hotrods crank into my superjet bigbore project, not running high RPM's but am running higher compression... Didn't know about the SBT at the time. I'm happy with the crank... I didn't pay attention to the bearings when I received the crank, so don't know exactly what's there...

I just took advantage of the free shipping deal with SBT and note their cranks are welded too (don't remember if the Hotrods crank was). I'm putting this crank into my parent's XP, which will turn higher RPM's than my SJ. Suitably impressed with the quality. I'm a little leary of the chinese bearings based on a previous experience with one made in China, but SBT warrants their product for a long time - more than enough to know if a bearing's going to go bad.

If a crank's been reconditioned, why would it be any less quality than new? Especially if it's been welded to boot...?

also hotrods do not make cranks for all models. Small pin 750 for example, and no one in their right mind would buy a new oem:bigeyes:

IF I buy 2 new Wiseco hotrod cranks from my supplier, he charges me $10 shipping! No SBT crankshafts for me except when used with their whole exchange motor. Like Paul said... less than $100 difference and this board is all about Hot Rodding with Horsepower for our motors! No Stockers here...

we have at least 2 sbt cranks in service in st. aug right now....1 of them has 3 top ends on it, the other is on its 2nd...

I just built a motor with a new sbt crank, granted..its a stocker that will most likely run stock compression

For my SXR:

HotRods: $699
SBT: $275 (plus one year no fault warranty).

That is a $429 savings. I put one in mine this time. I am just gonna sell it at the end of every season and get a new one. (I have 3 cores laying around to exchange).

Did you know that SBT is the warranty supplier of cranks for Yamaha here in the US? So when YAM warranties your new ski and the crankkshaft fails, it will get a SBT.. Yamaha thinks they're good enough.
The Mexican comment was not really needed IMO.
SBT is not the best, but for the price you cant go wrong..

I'd go with a new wiseco crank before looking at a mexican rebuilt sbt crank.

What nationality builds the best?

who is to say its not a mexican building the wiseco or hotrods?

maybe I can lure one away and have him help me at the shop:sneaky: :sneaky: Who knows maybe he can solve your RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR BOOOOM! problem.:haha:

and yes I know that is not funny really. sorry- I apologize.

Thats a lot cheaper than I found directly from hotrods. :cool2: Either way, I am only going to use this crank for one season. We'll see how she holds up.

I would say the Germans, Japanese and Americans have the best forgings and the Mexicans make for some good jokes.

I'm not trying to offend any beanors out there but after seeing the SBT factory tour video, I'm just not that impressed. I'm sure there cranks are not completely rebuilt by Mexicans but the engines they show in the beginning look like they would make for some good scrap metal IMO. Personally I would want to spend an extra hundred bucks on a crank that's completely brand new forged steel verses one that's been pulled apart and pressed back together.

Do you know why Mexicans re-fry their beans? Have you seen a Mexican do anything right the first time?
