Id call and ask the local marine patrol office, or the DMV, I dont want to give the ranger on duty ANY extra reasons to stop and hassle me!

If I can be compliant by asking ahead of time, this is my goal.

hell, I might be carrying some crack, or a dead hooker, I dont want to get stopped!

No use repeating everything above, but every state will have its own specific requirements. My philosophy is go exactly by the book when it comes to reg numbers. As soon as you stray a little from the rules, it gives the smokies "probable cause" to come and bug you.

Washington (my socialist, hippy, nanny state) even has requirements for the spacing of the letters.

Whatever, go spend a couple of bucks, get some custom made, and call it a day. The more you look legit the better.

If I were you I would google the regulations for your state. You're probably fine putting the reg numbers wherever you want to but what happens when your local water cop is having a bad day and decides that he's done with warnings or the same guys sees you for the second time in a couple of weeks. It's not worth the risk IMHO.

About a year ago I put my skis on the trailer as I was done for the day. I saw a couple of watercops getting ready for their day, in the parking lot.
So, me & Phill are minding our own business and start tying things down.
I could see it coming - I just knew Buford T. Justice was gonna stroll over. Btw, I am not making this Buford T. Justice thing up - that's how he looked, talked, and walked.
And he spent close to 20 minutes yapping and yapping and yapping. The first thing he complained about were my reg numbers. They didn't match what WA State wants. Not block letters, no good contrast.
But he wasn't "giving me a hard time, really" but wanted to warn me because other officers might not be as lenient.
Things could have been fine from here on out, but his silent partner muttered: "I can't read'em", whereupon my wife, in all her wise-assery replied: "Well, I can see them just fine.

Here we go.
Now Silent Bob and Buford thought we was callin' them blind.

And so he did more talking - LOTS more talking. Speaking of all them dang Seadoo-hot-doggers, with the loud exhaust and all.
Looking to make conversation a bit easier, I explained to him the concepts of a waterbox, dry pipes, and wetpipes.
I was afraid he was going to start flinging me ******** about my ski being loud. (Pretty dry B-pipe, front exhaust).
Then he starts complimenting me on my "quiet ski".

I have a friend that moved back here from Washington last spring. I was at the lake on his ski with the Washington numbers. His sticker was orange, and ours is blue this year. A water cop stopped me, and I told him it was my friends that just moved back. He asked what my friends name was. I told him. He said 'okay, be careful'. Another time at Cave Run lake I got stopped for supposedly racing. Had to show my ext, and he asked for my registration that they give you with the sticker. I didn't have it, so I got a $75 ticket. I didn't know you had to have it, and hadn't been asked for it in the 15 years I've been going to the lake.

I have mine on the hood. I just used 2 inch high numbers. You're supposed to use 3 inch high numbers in vertical block letters. I've been stopped and checked for fire ext and registration with no problems on the letters. I'd rather put them on the handle pole, but some of the lakes I go to are a little more strict than others.

That's what I do.

Thanks for reminding me...while lecturing me on exhaust noise and registration letters, Buford informed me that not having the registration on your ski (paper) is no longer a traffic offense (like speeding) but rather a misdemeanor that results in arrest.

One of my friends at Lake Cumberland got a ticket on his mom's houseboat for not having the TITLE with him. I have NEVER heard of that before either. They were just parked in a cove.
