Rebuilding the SXF, Engine Ideas???

I am looking for ideas for rebuilding my SXR Shortblock. It will have a Vilder Aluminum charging flywheel and a Factory Wet 'B' Pipe. I have heard some people talking about big bore kits and stroker cranks. Are they reliable and how much more will it cost? Also, does porting make a big difference on SXRs? I heard the porting was allready pretty good on a stock SXR compared to a SJ.

Right now, all I have is a set of Cases and a Crank.

Everything Else is toast. My main goal is reliability. 2nd is performance and a close 3rd is price. So keep those in mind while you make suggestions. I am also looking for low end. I don't care about top speed much.
Thanks.

OK, there are 2 people who I know are specialist whereas the SXR is concerned.......... Tim Zarnsdorf and Bill Haig.......... Both could help you out with porting and such.................

Tim is not too far from you........ well, up north, Illoinois area (SP!) Antioch I think, he is on PWCToday as ZFORCE227 but does not post much......... same name on Ebay...........

Keith over at Head Enterprises can give you a nice portjob on your cylinders. He did mine on my kawi, and it was great. Also, switched to a single carb. Gobs of bottom end power.

Definatly porting and port matching. Smooth out/polish the exhaust side, rough up the intake tract. See if you can do a X-metal water box for simplicity........and the BRAPPPPPPP!!! ADA head and bump up your compression. Carbon freestyle rideplate. And you know I am a fan of the power bombs by Riva  FCV and restrictors for more precise tuning. :cheer: :cheer:

Definatly porting. From what I read our SX-R's are pretty tame from the factory. Stock stroke crank so you can still rev. I am doing porting and duel 44s this winter on mine. Was going to have Lehr do it.

I am looking for reliability... so I am gonna actually lower my compression and probably switch back to a stock head and flame arrestor. I ride about 5 to 6 full tanks of gas a week and do a lot of WOT runs and long cruises along with wake jumping and a little flatwater freestyle. I am not nice to my ski at all in anyway.... So I am looking for mods that will take my brutal abuse.

Does porting make my ski any less reliable???

Wamilton's has a cylinder package, It looks expensive at first but when you consider the cost of sleaves, pistons, domes, and machine work its not so bad.

I bet ported a 850cc jug would make plenty of power even with low compression

Atlantic Jet Sports sells the ada shells with their logo for $160

That should make some steam. DJ get out that credit card.

$1820 just for the top end is a little high.... well, a lot high.
plus, I would still need a crank.

Wayyyyyyyyyyyyy out of my price range, but a cool idea. Maybe I can re-sleeve the cyllinder myself to 85mm.

Is a carbon rideplate gonna make ANY difference on my ski?? I just chopped up a stocker. Whats the point of a carbon plate?

I notice a difference on my boat. Compared to my metal plate I save 3lbs with a carbon one.

Well a BB kit from Paul is around the same price, a little higher achually.

I don't need to save a couple lbs. right now... Maybe some day.

I just meant high for my budget right now... I need to get this running for as little as possible... I was just wondering if I was gonna resleeve the cyllinders, why not go bigger? Pistons and sleeves cost the same, right? Are any other mods needed to go bigger with the pistons???

Do you want it back togather this season or is this a winter project?

How was the power before? Was it performing about how you wanted it?

I had plenty of power before... actually, more than I really needed. It screamed once I got it dialed in. (At Lanier it was a dog) It looks like an early winter project. I want to go to Daytona for sure and hopefully Jersey...

Thanks for the suggestions Mr. Rat... I am thinking about all of em. Are you on the water now, or waiting for spring?

oh I am on the water big time  That lamey pv motor is an arm jerker for sure. Ski is running and handling great (video of it on my build page). Maybe I will put that MSD TL on soon, but no need to tear it down again just yet.

Once you do a light flywheel I think you will be happy, if not I would look into some larger carbs...........really helped my throttle response.

I plan on going to Daytona, I am dying to ride in the surf. The Rockn Ride looked great as well and I am sorry I missed that event......anything with waves is what I am looking for.

Typically no (depending on the portjob). If the motor is port matched through out you are not really gaining hp......but merely reclaiming power that should have been there in the first place. However, if it is done by a pro the cylinder will last and just work more effectivly for a specific application or just work as it was intended in stock form. However, when you start modifying the heights of ports and such (if it is not done right) you can run the risk of burning up your pistons or having a rough, unbalanced motor.

Daytona was the best ride I have ever been too. Maybe we can carpool.

Any down side to going big bore when I re-sleeve??? I was thinking of going 85mm
