No, use to pitch's were just straight pitch (550 Days) 15 degree 15.5, 16,16.5 etc etc the 15 would work good on a stock ski or if you wanted more bottom, the 15.5-16 was more for "Limited Setups" 17 for more built motors and top speeds (Note, based on 550/650 prop pitch's)
When the variable pitch props came out they kinda work the same way. But they are not determined by the amount of spread, but the beginning pitch and the final pitch ie 13-17. Every Prop design is different, pitch number from one mfg does not necissarilly match up to another brand.
for instance
Stock SJ 12-17 Limited 14-18 Mod 15-19 for a SKAT Slimline
Stock SJ 14-18 Limited 14.5-18.7 Mod 15-21 for a Solas
each mfg props will do the same thing, they just have different designs.
when it comes to freestyle they get even more picky, why? because every setup is different, SKI "A" may need a 13-15 to make it work, while SKI "B" will need a 13-17.........etc etc
