"they still make those things"????

I hate that! We were cutting out of a wedding reception early the other day (hey...we had a babysitter and it was a great day for riding  ) Anyhow, I told a lady at our table why we were leaving and she wanted to know what kind of skis we have. I told "the kind you stand up on". She was like, "Oooohhh...you have the OLD kind, they don't make those anymore do they?" I said, "actually my ski is a 2005". She was blown away!

I was a little offended...I could tell by the look on her face that she was picturing a couple of old beater skis. She was probably let down that we did not have the newest, biggest, Sea Doos with the bestest, brightest graphics. (with matching PFDs)

In a way.... I kinda like the fact that no one knows what we do.
It makes it that much cooler to people when the see how deticated to it that we are... People realize we do it out of pure love of the sport, not cause we want to be the next "Tony Hawk"

disclaimer: Tony is a pimp and don't mean anything bad toward him

I don't even WANT our sport to be as big as FMX, skateboarding, etc.

What I do want, is SOME money to come back in the sport. It would be nice if the level of sponsor/advertiser flow could get back to what it was in the mid 90's. It would be nice if there could be a few real PRO racers/freeriders/freestylers. It would be nice if there were a national tour again. It would be nice if you didn't have a better chance of seeing domino tournaments on tv than jetski events.

They are showing up more often. There was a string of Toyota commercials out last month for thier 'Toyotathon Summer Clearance' that had a Kawi SXI Pro on it(no idea why they wouldn't have gone with an SXR or an SJ, but I got a kick out of it).
This month's issue of Men's Health has an ad in the back promoting South Africa Tourism with a dude on an SJ pulling a backflip.

sweet comercial!

I also like that our sport is not as big as fmx or skateboarding. I do get the occasional "they still make those?" but more often i hear "those are so bad ass!" because you almost never see them, people are more interested. Just like my hovercraft. when people see it they just about **** themselves because they have never seen one in person.(hovercraft is for sale if anyone is interested). It just kills me when i ride with my cousin and his stock sxr and people ask, "so which one is faster?" and i have to tell them his is, but mine has alot more bottom end. and they are like o cool, i like his.:banghead:

no.... on this subject my mind is pretty made up... I have put a lot of thougt into this particular issue... We have no chance up against MX, BMX, Skateboarding.... They steal all of out fresh bait... Any sport that costs as much as Freeride/Freestyle is gonna fail. A kid can go buy a deck and trucks for 150$ and rip it for 3 months.. I spend 150$ on oil and gas in that period of time.. It's not an easy sport to be involved w/... You have to really love it.

Item - cost - operating time before overhaul
BMX bike - 500$ - 2 years
Skateboard - 150$ - 4 months
MX bike - 2k$ - 1-2 years
Freeride/Freestyle ski - 5k-30k$ - 2 years

you do the math.... and on top of that you have to have money for fuel, oil, o-rings, grease, and several other items to keep the ski running properly..

lmao............. slutty........ what u think streetbike freestyle costs?

and there are more and more guys getting big sponsorships/paid trips for paid shows around the world........... everyday

Look at the cost of NASCAR, although many dont consider it a sport.

There's more underground worlds then just jetskiing, for example, go-kart racing. I've never seen it on TV more then 2 times, but I used to race the crap outta them. Whenever I'd tell someone I raced go-karts, the most common response was, "the ones that go like 30 miles an hour?" More like 60-65 with hairpins. Then there's also stock car racing, there's plenty of powersports that dont get covered, and sometimes its beneficial, like go-karting, one the biggest secrets of racing, and the cheapest to get into. (Have go-karts for sale by the way- set up for little kids, like 8-10 years old).

I'm going to have to argue with you on this one. You spend 5K-30K in 2 years on a ski because you love riding it and thats what you want to put you're money into. Someone who is just as much into MX could just as easily spend that kind of money every 2 years if not more on MX. If someone is into it enough. You could easily spend 12g's right off the bat with MX bikes just by leaving the showroom floor with a race bike and a practice bike. Then you have to get the suspension done on each one with costs 1k for both bikes, then you have to buy exhaust which will be almost 2g's for a good 4-stroke exhaust. Then race fee's every weekend, race fuel, maintenance, etc. Point is that the item cost is definetly not a factor because MX is a very expensive sport and it is very popular. It is a fairly young sport too. Roger DeCoster who runs team Suzuki for MX was racing World GP's in the mid seventies when Kawi came out with the 400. I think it needs a lot more time, although the sprot is progressing fairly quick. I've seen a lot of stand up's on the water in the past two or three years and I've been on the water since I was 9 and I'm 20 now. Do give up hope I think it is growing and more and more people are finding out about it. It just needs more time and I think it will get more popular.

I used to race MX, and about every 10 hours of ride time, or 3 race weekends, you were due for a new top end, Sure, they'd run, but you see huge power fall offs after that 10 hours of nothing but wide open throttle. I dont think even if you babied a MX 2 stroke, you could make one go for 2 years, much less in a race enviornment

Either way, MX and freestyle jetskiing are both expensive sports, something you can only justify spending the money on if you really enjoy it.

yea, its al about those same reasons for me too,I could care less if it ever becomes a pro sport,I just enjoy ridin with a cool crew and enjoying the ocean,it is expensive,if it were not ,every surfer from here to no where would be ridin with us,thats where we pick up most out young talent anyways. surfers either see us and hate us cause we are on more waves than them, and are havin more fun than them,or they buy one and come ride with us,there are no inbetweens, lol

I have to put my $.02 in here. I think the sport is growing but it will never be as big as any of the other sports mentioned. Because when you are 6, 7,or 8 years old and you want to start riding a bike your Dad buys you one you ride the hell out of it everynight after school all weekend long untill you are good on it and you are jumping your moms car with no hands. That takes hundredes of hours of ride time. Which you will NEVER get on a ski. Unless you own your own private water. (which there are only a couple here that has that) But anyone can ride there bike in the back yard or down the alley. 1. It is illegal for a 6,7, or 8 year old to ride 2. Who can take them to the lake to play for hours after school everynight. They get to ride for maybe 2 hours on the weekends that is just enough to call it a past time like watching basaeball.

Just look at all of the really good riders they spend countless hours on the water a week. Then there are the rest of us that may get to the water 3 days a week (if were lucky)

I don't know if this sport will ever grow to the point that MX is or not but I would like it to grow to the point that standups are advertised on TV so people will stop asking "Do they still make thoes? What year is that thing?"

ok.... maybe MX wasn't the best one to use.... I think it's still much cheaper for the average kid to get into MX and it's much more accessable...

Scevla...

How much do those bikes cost?... To be honest, I thought most I've seen were beaten up POS's... I figured you would want a crappy bike that runs decent... thos tricks don't seem to need lots of power..

This is just an outside observation....

Some dont want it to be big like MX, but some want the money and sponsors back in the sport. Well they go hand in hand... We all keep having fun and doing events and good things, what goes around comes around. It is Great to see commercials, advertising, and new people in the sport.

MX Bikes need things skis don't:
Tires
Brakes
Shocks
Wheel Bearings
Transmissions

All these parts naturally wear out... plus engine rebuilds etc...

I am glad to see us get any exposure. We are growing exponentially!!! It's definately not shrinking!!! All those old SJets in peoples garages are getting bought on Ebay and turned into Freestyle skis... 2 years ago there were 3 Standups with footholds in Cleveland. Now there are 12!!!
