Several of us from Austin/Houston/SA that can't make it to Crystal on 26-28 (and even some will be at both) are going to be riding surf at Port A on Sept 12-14. Come on down and ride with us!

This link is the map http://maps.yahoo.com/map?q1=27.774...=27.792961,-97.084942&q3=27.775102,-97.099598

We will be getting beach access at point B and riding at point C. If you want to camp, I am pretty sure you can beach camp there*. Also, in that map within a mile radius is an RV park and a neighborhood of beach houses to rent.

Beach houses: http://www.visitporta.net/map.htm
RV: http://www.campingfriend.com/PioneerBeachResort/

* I may be wrong about camping on the beach, but a few miles south in Mustang Island State Park, primitive camping is definitely allowed.

Last I heard - you can carry 1 full 5 gal can across the Port A ferry.

word to the wise though - if you thought Galveston ferry wait was bad, the PA ferry is worse...at least that's what I've heard.

The ferry's wait probably depends on time of day/weekend like Bolivar's does. The site mentions up to 6 ferries and a 3-10 minute trip so I imagine it can be bad or it can be fine. Its not a holiday weekend, so it might not be that bad. I will probably "hide" my can in the back of the truck or maybe I will only bring one.

I hope you come, Larry. I haven't seen you in a while. I hope Mark comes too. My Blaster need carb tuning again :)

I'll ask some friends that make the trip regularly.

A friend told me he found out the hard way - he was down there fishing and was expected back home in Houston at a certain time. Looked at the ferry website, saw 3-10 minute trip and figured "no problem"

until he got in line and had to wait for 3 hours - or something ridiculous like that.

I've been to Port A many times. Wait is usually pretty long for the ferry. Especially weekends. Camping is only allowed on Mustang Park. To go through Corpus adds even more time than the Winnie run. You have to drive to the city, through the city, over the bay bridge, across Mustang island, and finally to Port A which is at the end of its island.

Now that said, its so totally worth it. I love me some Port A. Surf is nice and best toward the jetties if you can fight off the surfers. The sand is deep and not groomed. (4x4 in places) So beware of that. The jetty blocks off beach access between the park and the Port A beaches. Its not a clear run from one end to the next.

I wouldnt do the ferry from SA or Austin, it is much faster to drive down SPID, and turn left once you get on the island. Houston might be a little faster, but SPID is a much nicer drive with a good view of the island. I am in for sure, and Christian I will send you an email Monday!

Moonie - I'm going to need a copilot that weekend

either Surfside with sobseawellhead or Port Aransas with the others

preference?

surfside - shorter drive

Port A - potentially much better surf

SOBseawellhead, I like that.
In Venevuela now, 17 days off at home in shorts and flipflops, go to work and now it's shorts and barefoot. I love my yob.
Checking on the house in Surfside today online

The ferries there are always hit or miss, you cannot predict them. Since that weekend is not any major holiday or anything, the worse times to get across would be Friday evening, Saturday morning and returning on Sunday. If you are coming down I35, it is just as quick to stay on the freeway into Corpus and take South Padre Island Drive (SPID) down and then cut back across Mustang Island.

From what I was told, you cannot operate any skis/boats off of the beach from the Jetties down to marker 50 (Which I believe is about where Point B is on the map for this ride)

Surf is nice and best toward the jetties if you can fight off the surfers. The sand is deep and not groomed. (4x4 in places) So beware of that. The jetty blocks off beach access between the park and the Port A beaches. Its not a clear run from one end to the next.

How long a drive from Houston to Port A??
They want too much moolah for the Surfside place, it's "mid-low" season.
I want low season rates
