Getting my 96 SJ ready to get back out on the lake. Just got it last year and it was stupid fast, now that I have some hours under my belt it just feels pretty fast. Looking for a little more juice as Im gonna be trying some new tricks this summer. As it sits now its a stock 701 with a machined head, jetted carbs and a riva pipe. After market prop also I believe, not sure what cut. This is a flat water boat only so Im trying to keep the weight down as well. Been poking around on the forum looking at different options, so far the 760 re-sleeve option looks pretty good. I just came across the WDK GP800 swap also, looks like a decent option. Just wanted to get some more opinions on the matter. Plus, I dont want to spend an arm and a leg on this either. My buddy has an identical ski to mine, we bought them from the same guy together with a trailer. It is crucial that my ski be faster than his, as that is how I roll :bigok: Any input would be much appreciated.

get rid of the riva pipe, port and bore your existing cyl and use a B pipe or..make sure you are propped correctly and it will make all the difference in the world...

if you can twist your stator 2-3mm CCW you will also be VERY pleasantly surprised..

do the 760

Thats the direction I was leaning. Ive been doing some research into it and it looks like all I need is to have my top end bored and ported, new sleeves and pistons. Is this correct? Do I need to do anything with my carbs? Oh, BTW my friend with the other ski is from Dickinson, not sure if thats near you in ND.

B pipe is on my list for sure. I don't like the way the reva pipe mounts to the head any way. I sheared two mounts last summer and my friend snapped a mounting tab off his.

Depending on what your budget is, I'd talk to a couple of pro-builders and see what they recommend. (BEFORE you buy parts)

Got a quote from the local SKi shop to do the work. $540 for parts and another $540 for labor. I think Ill just find a complete 760 to drop in.

A stock 760 wont make you happy. It will have more pull but it doesn't have the snap as the 701. Now a modded 760...that's a different story.

You may want to add an MSD Enhancer and a Lightened or better yet Lightweight Flywheel to your wish list.

A lighter flywheel will allow your engine to rev up faster and makes timing setup wakes easier. There are other tricks to revving faster as well, like bored nozzle and freestyle pump cone. The latter two items are the cheaper steps.

That's not a bad price as long as they have a good reputation and know how to port for LOW end and not top end. Buying a 760 is not the answer. The port timing is all different. You'd be better off porting a 701 and adding the pipe and msd enhancer and other bolt ons. You can use them in your next motor anyway so start there.

Where'd you get the quote from? There are several places, like APS or Webster's shop that are in town that can put together a 760. GroupK is also relatively close, if you were to ship your stuff.
