Super Jet Mdavies' SN - Winter Project

I forgot!
if you want to go no foam then check out my builld thread or scotty2t. if you want some foam, stuff rigid dow foam in it best you can. if you want to refoam and redig wet foam out next winter then use the 2 part 2-4 lbs foam from composites canada. install some drain plugs or duck bills at the back of the hull. have you thought of a scupper or oneway valve? now is the time to do it. just remember when you go diggin into your foam there are two alum tubes for cooling/syphon in there. good job finding some performance for your ski.

Will definitely check out those threads. I like the idea of rigid foam, but will have to see the weight added before I make the final decision. As for the defoam, about to abuse my Christmas eve free time and get to it. Just went out and bought $150 worth of supplies for the ski. Snagged some bolts for the RN pole, as well as JB weld (Didn't find the right epoxy). I will be using bolts and nylocks over rivets, just because I have never actually riveted something before. As for the JB, will it work? I believe I read that afew people have used it with no problems.

Will get posting pictures this evening.

Merry Christmas..... eve.

Wish I wasn't such a fool. I should have listened to you D-roc, cutting the tray out in one piece would have been so much easier.

SJ Build Winter 2010 027.jpg Still hacking away, but hey, its the holidays.
SJ Build Winter 2010 028.jpg
SJ Build Winter 2010 029.jpgBin so far, kinda stoked to fill it up.
SJ Build Winter 2010 031.jpg Cover for drive line to pump.... There was some adhesive there, but it has chipped off. Anyone know what it is, so I can fill it back up? Let me know,

Thanks - Merry Christmas.

hey man great progress. the green superglue around the driveline tube is best to chip off. reseal both ends back up. i used pc-11 which is very much like 3m 5200 but is a 2 part so it bonds and cures all the way thru when you goop it on. this is key to keeping your hull dry. be very picky in prepping those areas. acetone is good for cleaniing up the prepped areas. jb weld will work if your shortening your handpolle. rivits are the cleanest, work, and are so easy to use. once you do one rivit you will be popping holes in everything to use rivits on. same thing applies to the bonding area, rough it up and clean it good. I always do handpole shortening procedures with the pole on the ski so i can align it with the hood making sure it is straight.

I think I will pole the base of the pole bracket in so that I can do that. However, as I went to attach the hood straps behind the hood hooks, the bolt snapped clean off. I don't have a drill press, nor a decent bit lying around. Gotta wait till boxing day to getout and snag one.... So for now, I am stuck with chipping out foam for Christmas day.

So have been working half lazily at the SN. Managed to get most of the foam out of the tray and gunwhales with a large screw driver and other assorted tools lying around.

Tonight, the big job was Jb'ing the RN back together, which was alot easier than I thought. I had to get my hazard bracket drilled out and re-threaded due to a snapped bolt, but after I finally got that done, putting the pole back together was laughably easy.

Here are some pics of the pole, no bolts in it yet, letting it dry overnight.

SJ Build Winter 2010 034.jpg One question - When attaching the stock SN steering, is there suppose to be 2 plastic rings between the pole and the steering setup, OR one on the top and one on the bottom before the nuts?

Thanks Robbie, I wasnt sure, I figured when I originally took it apart I would just remember from memory.... Didn't think it would take me this long to get the RN Pole on though.

Will update with pics this weekend once I get some construction foam stuffed into the tray.

Bought construction foam today, and a can of cheap construction spray foam. My plan is to stuff the tray with as much hard foam as possible, then do a thin layer of spray foam over the top just keep everything in place as well as give me support to set the pieces back in to glass.

Will the construction foam give me enough support to my hull/tray, or should I be doing some additional reinforcements. I will not be riding in a surf, but still want a strong reliable hull. Let me know

One more question, where is the best place to purchase drain plugs to be drilled and epoxied in?

if you just want stock yamaha ones like on a blaster, when you come by i have a set

the yamaha ones are nice! construction foam is kinda spoungey, but it is probably better than nothing if your not going to reinforce everything. i would just try and make sure you pack / fit really well under your footholds.

Becareful using that construction expanding foam...I believe it relies on air to fully cure where as the 2 part stuff is a chemicla reaction and fully cures when both parts are mixed. I used the spray can stuff once to fill the gas fill of an X2 and the foam did not set as I had it too thick...the outside was dry but once I went to level it all off and got to the centre it was a big gooey mess. Personally I donlt think you will need it and I don;t think it is strong enough anyways to help with any type of structure or support. You should be able to shove enough of the dow/contruction foam in there and level it off so you can just drop your tray pieces back in and fibreglass over them.

Well, now I may not use the spray foam.

If I was going to use it, I would have sprayed a thin layer over everything, let it cure fully, and than sand it down to be flush with the bottom of the orginal tray.

Thanks for the advice on the structure of the tray, saves me from worrying.

How about best drain plugs, and where to pick them up?

http://www.outdoorgeardepot.com/product/Drain-Plug-Complete-PWC-Black-by-Seadog.html

Seems filmsy, and that seems to be mostly what I am looking at. Does Blowsion, Wamiltons, or any other AM place offer a sturdier one?

Let me know,

Mike

How are the blaster ones? I just want reliability, if you say its good, I will buy it off you tomorrow :)

Just picked up Footholds, Turf, Underpadding and drain plugs from Steve-UK, I gotta say, thank you for the amazing parts and service.

Headed out to Princess Auto and picked up some expoxy, glass, resin, various tools to help get the job done.

Will take some pics later on tonight, for now, its time to get those drain plugs and foam into that hull :)

Sunday Update -

Repainting the pole because I was not happy with it. Should be done by tonight, just got one more coat to do (Hopefully).

Installing drain plugs for the most part, having to do a minor patch, but due to the embarrassing nature, I will not go into detail.

Aside from that, I only need to purchase contact cement, and I will have everything I need for my build. Just bought a Limited Factory B Pipe from out west, and it will be shipped tomorrow.

I will take a final picture of my Pole before installing, which hopefully will get done tomorrow. I am already stoke for spring, I cannot wait to get out onto the water!
