markham STANDUP jetski lake

for the few of you south FL guys here that ride at the markham jetski lake regularly or occasionally...

i spoke with the one of the managers of markham park, the other day, about the possibility of dividing the jetski lake into 2 parts. 1 for standups and 1 for couches. i told her that the area didnt need to be too big, but big enough to accomodate 5 or 6 standups. basically from the 4th or 5th parking spot straight across toward the west. or all the way on the south end of the lake where we used to launch about 10 years ago. she seemed interested in what i was saying because i mentioned the safety factor involved with separating the standups from the sitdown "speedboats":sneaky: . i basically told her that the standups arent fast, we generally make quick hairpin turns in a confined area and theres usually a no0b on a couch going full throttle right next to us as if theyre passing on the right lane in a residential neighborhood at 70 mph. she said she has seen the chaos out there and knew exactly what i was talking about. she was also saying that she remembered when that lake was all standups and they rarely had a problem back then. she also said that she rode a standup years ago and remembered how challenging, yet fun, it was.... basically, she knew where i was coming from.

ive also been speaking with the staff that oversees the lake during riding hours about it and they all agreed that itd be a good idea. in fact, one of them that was there about a month ago is the one that brought it up to me when some drunken couchers were being dangerous morons. they were splashing their kids who were swimming in the water and coming within 1-2 feet of them. funny thing is that it works in our favor to discuss it while the couchers are out there because you can just point out what youre trying to describe.

so if this sounds as good an idea to you as it does to me, call and ask for margie or allison or stop by the office the next time youre there and bring it up to them as there is power in numbers.

Don't want to sound ignorant(too late), but where is this lake?
I wouldn't mind driving over some time to check it out (I'm on the Gulf coast)and maybe learn some new stuff.

the entrance to the park is ON alligator alley/i-75 right a few miles before ft lauderdale. its on the border of the everglades and civilization.

I mentioned the "Volusia County" or Daytona rules to my nephew today, explaining how they had a jet ski "zone" and how it would benefit our area if we had a similar system.

I guess I'll consider bringing this scenario up at a Commission meeting and see how it goes over...:clown:

does your nephew work for the local government in your area? is he the one that has the cell phone stapled to his head?

I'm over in Naples so depending where you live and how bad the city traffic is, I could probably get there first.

I'm definitely up for a ride and with enough time to prepare might even be bale to bring a few more stand up riders with me.
Fresh water would be a nice for a change.

cool! nipples is only 1.5 hours away! definately gotta do it. weekend sessions are from 8:30-11:30 , 12:00-3:00 and 3:30-6:30 and the weekday sessions are from 4-7pm. we usually do one or both of the last two sessions on the weekends and sometimes go out for a midweek evening ride. theres about 10 of us that get together and ride (not usually all at the same time since the side canal has been closed due to hurricane wilma), so there will more than likely be a few folks from the board there, too.

PM me for my ph# or just pm me when you wanna make plans to ride.

Just to play Devil's Advocate for a second: while the idea of segregating stand-ups from sit-downs would seem like heaven to most of us, bear in mind the reasons you're citing for keeping them apart is the same logic used by PWC-haters for banning jetskis and segregating them from the general boating population.
If I were an anti-PWC nutcase and found out that a lake had segregated certain PWCs, I'd jump all over that bandwagon and say, "See, even PWC riders admit that jetskis are unsafe to be around!"

well, ya cant argue with the truth.

the majority of them (down here, on flatwater) are unsafe. while education is certainly the best route, its not very practical because you cant educate someone thats not willing to get educated because they think they know better. besides, half these morons refuse to learn to speak english. you cant "force" education. therefore, segregation is the next best option, IMHO.

also, i really dont give a rats fuzzy ass about what "anti pwc nutcases" think. im not out to please them. im out to keep myself and my people safe on the water.
