Lets talk about Foot Holds.

The Good Old Days
I know there are many threads on this very subject but I still have some questions.

First of all, I have never ridden a ski with holds nor have I seen any live.
Just looking at pictures and comparing one to the other is useless as I don't know what to look at or for in a foot hold.

In the other threads when someone asks about a certain type and the answer is usually "I have these and like them" or "I had then on my old ski but have brand X now and love them a lot more".

What I would like to know is what exactly do you "love" about "them" ?
Do certain holds work better for beginners as in people who never used holds before ?
Are certain designs meant for surf while others work better on flat water ?
Am I asking too many stupid questions and instead should hook up with someone who has holds and try them ?

I'm thinking of taking the plunge and getting some foot holds. Not having any experience isn't making it any easier to decide which ones to go for.
I have so many questions but to keep this thread relatively short I'll keep them for later.

they are like shoes, some are more comfortable than others, like matt said, personal preference plays a lot into it, i have only tried 2, 24/7 and wamilton rickters, the 24/7's are mucho comfortable for me in my size 12 hurricane platform feet.

the wamiltons tend to hurt the top off my foot unless i have a lot of turf built up onthe top

if i was gonna buy a set today i would go with the 24/7, although the new waterdog ones look very intresting

If I ride a boat without them now I think WTF! how can this guy ride this thing? Footholds are one of the best mods I have made to my boat. Get U some, you wont regret it.

Hey Boris -
As you know I bought that 95 sj a while back, and found out the ride tray had a crack in it and the foam was all waterlogged, So I defoamed it, put in a 24/7 scupper with a home depot 1 way valve, also 24/7 footholds, and reinforced everything and refoamed and returfed. Chris @ 24/7 had all the goodies and knowledge to get me through it. I only rode with the footholds two times , but they definately let you control the ski better, and I actually subbed it completely last week. They take some getting used to , but definately allow you to toss the ski around more. I will be bringing this ski to Fort Myers in Sept. but you probably dont want to wait that long!

we have rickters and watercraft factory's new design. like ski4 said, you have to build up the inside with turf, but theyre made big enough to allow for that. if you have tiny feet, you simply add even more padding under/above the turf in the hold.

you should come to the other side and ride w/ us. youll get the feel for the holds then go from there. pm me if ya want.

Don't forget about XFT.

I have only had 24/7 and I love how they feel. No pressure points or discomfort. I have ridden other skis with other holds on them and I just really like the way the 24/7 fit my 9 1/2 feet. I wear asic wrestling boots and the combination works for me.

my 2 cents

as long as the subject is up, how do you guys go about turfing on these? I was considering using construction paper to form around it as a template and then transfer that to hydroturf. Also, will one sheet of Diamond mold off the hydroturf site take care of the entire tray? Where is the underpad foam available?

Thanks

Pfffft....back at ya, unskilled optometrist buddy! I'd make my own B-Pipe, and buy footholds.

Thank you guys.

I am going to get foot holds for sure but first I want to get as much info as I can. Don't want to buy the first type I come across only to find out that I hate them.

When I ride I always have my boots on (Slippery Comp size XL) and try my hardest to hold on to the sides of the tray when I jump, that doesn't always work.
Nothing better than having to look for the tray when it's time to land.

sflsurfrider, I will definitely hook up with you guys. Hopefully sooner than later.

Now I'll just sit back and read some more of your comments while the resin on my hood dries.

One sheet will do tray and sides -- if you run the tray part cross-wise (length of dimamonds run across). I think you want to do it that way for best traction anyway.

Another tip: I found some clear vinyl kitchen shelf liner stuff at wall mart that worked great for making templates. Not cheap though, I think $8 for the template cost half as much as the b turf..

I turfed mine using I section of white turf for the inside of the foothold and 1 solid sheet of black for the sides. I like using posterboard to make a template and have found on other tuf jobs I have done that the kits do not work that well. I have more luck making my own templates and going from there. Take you time b/c it is one of those jobs that if you rush it, not only will it look like crap but you will ahve to live with it until you returf again.

ive purchased/installed the 24/7's, rickters, and dawson diggers.. and i've ridden other peoples' boats with others.. i'd recommend the 24/7 and the rickters.. i think the diggers were a little small for my liking.
saki doesn't know what's up. He probably runs an open electrical box while doing his hood tricks. I've got size 12's and the kickers are for sure the ********.

And that, my friends, is post numero uno.
