Laserjet Freestyle ski

A few of you may have seen the Laserjet in the for sale section of the X here. i would like to get some opinions on the handling of this ski vs. say a RN or the 750 kawis. i am not really worried about the carving aspect but are they a fun ski to rip around on the lake and such?

my plan would be drop in my complete sxr driveline with some sort of 650 pipe. from what i am told there probably wont be room to fit my wet pipe but who knows. i know that there will be some serious glass work involved to get the 140mm kawi pump to fit, but whats a build without some fun? and i know i will have to align the pump and motor too but i am not scared...also i know that there will have to be a custom driveshaft made, again i know people to do this so it wont be a problem in the slightest (free too).

i planned on chopping the hell out of my sxr this winter anyway (shortening, lightening, no more rear exahust, the list goes on) so why not start with a much lighter platform (rare too) and make a badass freestyle/lake ripping machine out of it.

set up would be(not going to type all my motor mods)

sxr motor ported, 46mm carbs, aluminum flywheel, 180 psi (getting bored this winter to a secret amount of cc's)
650 pipe or room permitting wetpipe
sxr pump with a skat 13/18 cutback prop.

do you think the hull will be able to handle this motor/pump setup? i think it should make for a pretty nasty fast ski, the people who rode my ski in GA all said it ran well, and it should hopefully be ALOT lighter than my terd of an sxr.

i figure with the money i get from selling my sxr hull and possibly my wet pipe i should be able to afford this project easily, maybe (hopefully) have some left over.

i am very seriously kicking around the idea of this so if you know of any massive hurdles that i havent mentioned please let me know. ohh and i am not buying a yamaha.....

Dude, don't do it. Stay with your SXR. I've never ridden a laserjet but I have ridden ever kawi stand up and the sxr is the best for alot of reasons.
The sxr hooks up way better than another kawi evermade.
You be going backwards with a older hull.

i know what you mean, but... the biggest factor i am taking into consideration is weight. it will be who knows 50-70 pounds lighter than my sxr making close to the same power depending on the pipe. i am always willing to try something......

i mean if things work out i may not have to sell my sxr hull. so if i dont like it i can put the sxr back together...

yeah i broke a femur in just x-ray is in my avatar. but its doing well still sore but i am working on it alot.

yeah i dont really want to much more motor, but i want less weight. and this would be a cool thing because no one else really has one and its really not that expensive

depending on what year model, you may have to heavily reinforce the bulkhead, they had issues and most were recalled.(think it was the first production runs, not sure exactly, wedoseadoo can tell you more about it).

This ski was the year of the stronger bulkhead. It rides very very similar to a 750 and is pretty much the same size although I think it might be lighter. You will definitly need to reinforce it for a freeride/freestyle application it is made to be really light and you can practically see through the sides of the hull when the sun hits is (from the inside). I think it would be a fun ride with a big motor and pump setup in a fairly small/light hull, ask Corey to set it on a bathroom scale for you. Wedoseadoo knows ALOT about the ski/hull but I am 85% sure he will try and talk you out of it.

BlunderJet!

Don't even think about it!

I bought one of those POS's back in 1993. I read all of the hype in the magazines and just had to have one. I think it was 6K.

That boat turned out to be the biggest friggin' nightmare. I just about gave up PWC forever because of that mess.

That POS barely made it through one weekend without some sort of serious problem. I would return that boat almost every monday, to the factory in Huntington Beach, for a different warranty issue. The bulkhead would never stay sealed properly, despite a replacement hull. The steering cable snapped on me repeatedly. The handlepole snapped on me twice. BTW, The handle pole was poorly designed, and the pivot placement was too far back. (Think JS-650). It was difficult to fly this boat. Probably the worst freestyle hull I have ever ridden.

The hull was paper thin in some spots. The fit and finish was horrendous. Lot's of cheap pot metal parts through out. I thought I was getting an authentic, american made PJS motor, but in reality was a cheap tiawan knockoff. I could never get it to run right.

LaserJet (Blunderjet), went into chapter 11. I ended up removing the drivetrain and motor and taking a pick axe to the hull and setting it on fire. I was so fed up with it and would never have considered selling to to anyone.

I wasted almost 2 seasons battling that piece of crap. I went back to basics with a 1995 reed valve 550. My advice...run away!

Please don't hold anything back, tell us how you really feel.:smashfreakB:

My story is just the opposite only I love the hull.the handling and the light weight, didn't like the power delivery of the engine though,I have never broken one single part on mine in the seven years that I have owned it.It probably matters a lot that I assembled this ski myself under warranty,I will agree if you had a 92 factory assembled boat it was not proprerly assembled, there was some shoddy workmanship on mine to say the least.Nice thing is I get the chance to do it like it should have been done the first time ,just way stronger and way faster.

I had a couple small problems with mine over the course of a short MN season but nothing major. For what it was and what I payed for it, it was a pretty nice ski, perfect for the girlfriend to ride.

no disrespect intended, but dont waste your time unless you really just want to try something different for the sake of just wanting to try something different.

and if youre gonna do it for that reason, might as well figure out how to drop a yami motor in it while youre at it.

leave it as a girlfriend boat, dont spend any $$$ or worse, your valuable time on it

just my .02

Wouldn't it have been easier to say, just get a superjet?:1244:

i wouldnt be caught dead on a superjet, i would rather swim with a cinder block tied around my neck than be seen on a superjet...no lie

man, I can understand your sentiment, but to think that you would consider a Laserjet over a Superjet is just......... well, are you sure you did not break more than your leg???
