While most have not ridden one, the statement of a superjet being better is dead nuts. It sounds like Aquaholic has put a season or so on one, I had a good part of the season on one and from what I can tell its like riding a 750sx. Honestly it handled the same, felt the same, had the same/similar power as the single carb SX that I rode. It was a cool ski because it was rare, it probably would handle a bouy couse really well but its not a freestyle machine. If you have lots of time to kill and money to blow it would be a cool project but IMO there are better places to spend the $. I felt guilty for parting the one out and painting the other just for nostalgia, would have been cool to see one semi restored.

Reliving my nightmare

I just dug through some old pile of archive photos and found these.

The one pic shows me at the colorado river uncrating my brand new Blunder jet. I was so stoked. My friends were really envious. This thing looked so wild and futuristic compared to the 440's and 550 that we had. Dual exhaust!!!!!!!

The magazines all said this thing would do 50mph right out of the box. "Best, fastest. blah blah blah". Jeff Jacobs was quoted saying it could win "right out of the box".

After spending a few minutes on this thing, I got a sick feeling in my stomach for spending that kind of money on something that was cleary not right. It ran like S***! And, it was immediately apparent that it was not an ideal hull for doing tricks.

The steering cable snapped after 45 minutes.

I was bummed.

The bottom pic is January 1993. My friend also made the mistake of buying one of these POS. He had the F14 which was the single carbed version. He hated it as well.

i have ridden superjets, and i can honestly say i dont like them. they just dont do it for me at all. they handle like crap and from all of the ones that i rode the only ones that were faster (not by much) were lamey strokers, and those are big money skis. i have some money in my ski yes but certainly not as much as most superjets and i would take my kawi over them ANYDAY. and why run the same setup as everyone else? i mean you guys bitch about not seeing innovation in this sport so why not try something new?

everywhere i look its the same stuff over and over ADA girdled heads, B pipes, x-metal poles worx intake grat etc. i know there are guys on here who have tried many setups and i respect that. but for the guys who just go with what everyone tells them, grow an imagination and try things.

most of you guys have never ridden a laserjet, myself included, so how can you say it wont be a good freestyle ski? you see something that doesnt say "yamaha" written on the side and instantly its shut down. you people want to see the sport progression right, not just in tricks but in machines. so why do you all just make clone skis all the time? next freeride i go to its going to be like walking through the pits of a nascar race because all of the skis are the same. i know it takes time and money to try things and for some its just not practical. but i like to try things and i am not afraid to take a hit if something doesnt work out.

you guys are claiming how much of a waste of money this project would be, but why? to start its a very light hull that handles similar to a 750sx, with a big bore ported sxr motor and a 140mm pump with a TBM cone and fab up a nasty intake grate and it should leap out of the water.

i took a break from posting on this site because there is no oridianlity here. i came back and not much has change. wedoseedoo i respect your thinking out of the box and trying things, your the kinda guys who helps keep this sport going. its like talking to a wall on this site, no one wants to see anything new or wants to see anyone try something all you want is you classic lame ass superjet.

sorry for my rant but i havent been able to rip on my ski for months and i am away at school trying to pull off an engineering degree and its making me nuts.

i cant wait to take a road trip and pick this thing up and bring it to the GA freeride, and with some luck you yamaha boys will be eating your words. you guys putting this thought down makes me want to do it even more.....BRAAAAAAP.

Yeah its a waste of money,ok but you know Corey wants what $350.00 for that ski? I paid $300.00 for mine brand new in 1999,I just sold the engine out of it for $600.00 thats after riding it for 7 years. So I doubled my money, rode the ski for 7 years and still have the hull. You show me a superjet that you can do that on and I will buy ten of them.I get to mod up the hull and keep riding, only this time I get to build the ski that I always wanted just like I want it,the way I see it I have to spend $300.00 before this build costs me anything. Please keep in mind this is a very light epoxy e-glass composite hull ,I see guys spending $6000.00 and up for a carbon fiber superjet hull,by all means ,show me the error of my ways.

PS you go KX454,I have seen your work you could pull this off no problem

i agree with you man, i am tierd of ppl saying get a superjet, i have one myself that i am going to build but i am also building a 300 sx with a 650 or 550 in it. i know weadoseadoo had done that one before. It is guys like that that make the sport bettr. Kx454 if you want to try it try it, you are starting with a good engin platrform and pump set up, so if you can make the hull match that setup then you will have a pretty mean ski.

Life doesnt revolve around the superjet...but i will give it to yamaha for making one nice ski

Hey KX, I hate that I did not get to meet you at Alatoona or get to ride that beast........

I even started to think about converting my SXR to freestyle also, but to do so, the only way would be with it having a really tweaked engine to overpower the weight, would definately look at softing up the chines and a few thinks to loosen the hull up some, but the money is not there so It will stick to being a race ski even though I am pretty much done racing seriously now........

Hey BigK, go for the SXR freestyle boat, I did and love it. I've chopped the heck out of my SXR and it's light and powerful. Het KX, what's the weight on the Laserjet?

Seriously Aqua is right, its not just a "superjets are the best" kind of deal. The laserjet is really not a very good choice for a freestyle/freeride boat.

Hey Kx, maybe get the laserjet and find a powerplant for it and a pump, I got a SXR stock pump laying around not being used since I got the magnum, That's a descent insurance plan, or get creative on the SXR and get out the sawzall. The Laserjet does look better than I pictured it would.

I agree with you, but if KX wants to do this then it is a good choice for him, I doubt that there will be much untouched by the time he gets through with it......

I as usual disagree with most on here ,I think the thunderjet will make an excellent freestyle boat, like a superjet,it will have to be heavily reinforced, thats not a real problem, the power to weight ratio on this thing should be off the chart. It will need some handholds added and there is plenty of room for footholds to be installed,I think you will be amazed when you get a final weight on my build.:poke:

hmm thats a good idea, my friend has a kawi 750 zxi complete that he is going to be selling off. his pump is shot so maybe i will have to throw you some cash to get that pump....hmm you got me thinking....it would be nice to have 2 skis. although if thats the case i may be working on the laserjet in my apartment here at school haha.....
