laptop recommendations

My laptop crapped out so Im lookin for a replacement. I had a HP DV5000 I bought in 2006, and I wasnt all that impressed with it, although it did serve me alright.

I dont do much on it, just search the net, some work related stuff in MS Office, and download movies and music. But no gaming, and i sometimes, rarely, make some small videos in moviemaker.

I spent way to much on my HP for it to get outdated too fast so this time I dont want to spend so much, somewhere around $500. I looked at bestbuy and saw a few good looking and seemingly well equipped machines for 500. A few toshibas, dells, and such. I saw a gateway with 4gb ram, athalon dual core processor, and like 320gb drive, for $500. Sounds good to me but iv heard a bad rep about gateway.

So any suggestions? Thanks!

I recently got a Lenovo Ideapad that i'm very happy with. I have the Y450 and splurged on the best featured one. It ended up costing me $1000 but i believe very similarly spec'ed ones with just slightly slower processors were around $700. Free upgrade to Windows 7 as well, or i'm sure they'll all ship with Windows 7 in a few weeks.

good luck.

I have a few of these at work and they are solid machines.

Lenovo ThinkPad R500 Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4GHz 15.4in Laptop $584.10 Free Shipping

I'm partial to Thinkpad's because that is all I use at work. A few of the exec's get the lighter and thinner T versions but everyone else gets the R's. Good solid machines.

The best deal imo is go to lenovo.com/cpp. type in "familyandfriends". this gets you contractor pricing. and then click value line and look at the G550 the contractor price is $430. its pretty much the same specs as the others but it has 3gb of DDR3 instead of DDr3. If you are looking for a bit more then check out the build your own ideapad y550. i just built one with 2.4ghz core 2 duo, nvidia graphicos card etc for 600.

If your looking for a good deal I got a laptop in March off the dell outlet supposedly it had a scratch or something it was in the scratch and dent section got it for $380 supposed to be 7-800 on the regular site...Also if you find a dell coupon even if its a week or so expired call and talk to customer service and tell them thats the deal breaker is whether or not you can use this coupon a family member received or not. They gladly applied it and I think I got an additional 15% off when I got mine

Ditto on the Dell outlet. They still have excellent warranties and the prices are really good compared to new. My last 2 have been from there.

x3 on the dell outlet.. you can get a XPS Studio 13 for $800-900 that has the same hardware (or better) as the macbook pro for $1600+

don't get me wrong, macbook pros look and feel nice. but apples for apples computing, i'll take the dell

Thanks for the great replies. Everyone one of em seems good, just gotta figure out which way I wanna go now. I'll lookin into gettin another dv5 for parts too.

Would love to get a mac but just a bit out of my budget, since I just broke my ankle stupidly bad so I'm unemployed for a long while.

Thanks!
