300/440/550 JS550 bendix to flywheel seize.

92 Kawi JS 550. 2 year old flywheel + 2 year old OEM starter. Very low hours on the rig.

I thought the motor had a ringe sieze. Pulling the motor down I found that the edge of the bendix was jammed into the edge of the flywheel teeth. That is what has caused the apparent seizure.

Pulled the starter and everything is A-OK now.

I have never seen this failure befoere and want to get the boat back to its owner.

Starter looks fine. Flywheel has normal wear.

I am gonna grease everything up and go from there. Any other ideas ????

i had that happen to my 93 550sx a couple of years ago... i went to start it and all of a sudden a nasty screaching, grinding sound and then nothing... thought for sure it was toast... yanked the motor and pulled the starter... and sure enough... that was it... pulled it apart or what i could... and lubed it up good... has worked fine since

Hmmm, I have a 550 that did that a last summer. I thought it was either the pistons seized or the pump wear ring was so constricted it wouldn't start. Now that I think of it it is probably the same starter problem. I need to dig it out and see if i can fix it.
