New to the sport and the boards here..
A friend had been pushing for a bit that I needed to get in on the stand up scene having been riding moto and surfing for years. Had been a bit timid riding his superjet since I was comfy on his butt boat that was "for his wife", it was easy and I really didnt like having a learning curve.. but watching, I never could get as close to the pit as he and the re-entries just look sick! He really just sounded like me years ago telling my friends to ditch their boogie boards and just stand up! A couple months later, and now I have a square for myself and one for each of my boys. Now Im asking myself "why did it take so long??" All that paddling, no more! We've been out a handful of times, even went 3 days last week and perhaps Im too old for that. At least thats what the body's telling me. My youngest who's 12 has really gotten into it, with them being home-schooled we have a bit more time to get in the water than most his age.
Last friday we ran down to the harbor for a sesh to find the oside crew prepping to grab a handful in some glassy 3-5 ft surf. My son and I were the first out besides a couple of guys towing in, one of which as I heard later had some unkind words with my son, it was pretty uncool, but he's good at brushing that kind of stuff off. The crew blast out and a ripping display of ridonkulous talent ensues. Seen a little on youtube but to see in person is just another level. A bit later Mr. Gomez cruises up and introduces himself and gives my son a little 'tour' into the inside. And a short time after that Mr. Champion does the same.
I gotta say, conveying the stoke instilled into this grom by you guys is difficult. He now has big aspirations to make stand ups his career. This is exactly what the sport needs, real genuine guys that are just stoked to promote the sport and welcome everyone having fun doing it.
Also thanks! to Ross' buddy for the tow to my ski, it was a huge help after getting hammered by that set, I've found swimming with a vest gloves, booties, and a helmet is a bit different than pulling your surfboard leash and hopping on..
So big props to the crew, you guys are pure class! :headbang:
See you in the water!
