Surfriding Intake grate selection

I used to run a blaster R&D grate on my SJ but it was too aggressive and would chuck me off the ski when letting off the gas from full throttle. Since then I have been running a worx 205D with the built in pump stuffer (more of a race grate) and decided I want to mess with intake grates again. I think this grate might not be what I need with the new motor and pump setup.

Just wondering what everyone likes in the surf with a bigger motor setup and mag pump.
This will be going on my RN with SS865(827) and setback 144 mag pump w 14/19 if it makes any difference.

I think I have a Riva grate on my SN and I like the way that feels.
Just looking for some suggestions as I don't want to buy 5 grates to try out and sell. That's a pain in the ass.

I was running a setup close to that, 846SS on avgas, 144 mag 14/19.... Used a XR Tech that was cleaned up A L O T & a Worx 201, both worked great in the surf.... Jet Dynamics I here is the sh*t these days, just ordered one for my new build.

Either a Worx 201 (I think is the #), or XR Tech (Priced right)...

I believe the 201 is the same style as the 205 I am running but with a deeper, more agressive scoop. How does the XR tech compare in shape and style?

The XR is a massive shovel that loads the pump like a mofo and gives big time hook up, you may have to go down in pitch. If you like to slide a lot this is not the best intake .

I run a simple Pro-tec $15.00 open grate for surf, not aggressive, almost flush with the bottom, lets the boat slide (real loose), and NOT scoop excessive amounts of sand on a beach landing. The top loader grates I've tried like to overload the pump. It seems when running the setback mag pumps, grate choice is critical, especially if you RIDE your boat.
Even the size of the "chip" on the open style grate makes a difference at speed, but if you only ride around slow, doing tricks, a mild toploader grate will work for you.

I ride wide open to get out to the surf and then do a lot of mid throttle riding while in the surf. Not too much slow speed flatwater or anything like that. What you said above is exactly why I don't want to go too aggressive. I have been there before with the blaster grate I ran. Hook up was amazing but the full throttle runs were a bit hairy after you let off.

Is it better than a standard Worx 201?
What do you like better about it?
I'm running a 201 now, wondering if there is any reason to switch.

SS865, stock pump, 14/19 bighub w/pump stuffer - *Stock Hull

I run a jet dymamics, it is pretty aggressive, but I like having some brakes (except for occasional high speed runs). The pump stays hooked up good in the surf but I can break it free when I want to. I have thought about going down 1 pitch on the prop.

I would like to try some other grates some day too.

I never had a regular pump,
my other is ski was 08 superjet ss865 and I had works 201 and tbm, and was barely making it. and when Pat Bogie did the water test he said my ski was starving for water,
and my Old superfreak also was starving for water so we had a custom intake too, I love the XR tech, very aggressive, and decent price too
like I said, u need 3 hours of sanding to make it good, but I bunch of guys are going to use Jet dymamics, we will see how it works
what set up u are using on the superfreak?

Ok what's the deal XR, R&D aqua vein and Jetdynamics look like close to the same thing, who has held them up next to each other and what's different about them ? I like to take about 3/4" off the scoop on the XR to get right for me .

same here.cant stand a toploader anymore, much less an agressive one.....

I think this is one of the parts that people take for granted thinking they are all the same....not even close though

I put stockers on all my skis as its really the only one that will allow the wave to just push the ski right along sideways as surfing a wave....

The jetdynamics will allow you (with the right approach) to the throw the ski sideways in the bowl on the lip doing a floater or on the roof of a hollow wave. Stock one just does not load that well.

Any one tried the adjustable intake grate? The one brian at Thrust innovations inventing..
