I need some help here please

Well my parents bought a house on lake jackson last year and we have a boat and a sitdown. i really wanna get a stand up to learn on though. i was originally looking at spending alot on a new sj or something. my mom is trying to talk me into an older one that i can pick up alot cheaper. what do i need to know about standups before i buy? also im concerned about a thread i read on scuppers and oneway valves. it would be convenient to keep the ski docked, possibly for weeks at a time. My house doesnt have a ramp only concrete stairs and a dock. would i be able to just get some help picking it out of the water or would i need to go to a ramp? id rather not pay $5 everytime i wanna ride. im sure im missing alot of questions but i already typed more than most people probably wanna read :)

look for a square nose sj or fx1. 90 to 95. Look for something with a 701. I wouldn't suggest leaving it tied up... just get a cart...or have a friend help you out. they are around 300lbs. Not light but doable easy.

whats the difference between square and rounded noses aside from the shape? also im sure i could rig some tracks and a wench up to pull it in and out of the water.
i found a 1991 Yamaha 650 Superjet on ebay up to about 600 so far reserve not met though. all stock i believe. is this something i should get as a starter and just upgrade as i progress or is it even a decent base model to build from?

Hi, I am also fairly new to stand up jetsking. This site has ALOT of information, it would be wise for you to use the "search" tool and just read through some/a lot of older posts. Doing this myself I have learned a ton of information pertaining to standup jetskis/ yamaha super jets. :Banane37:

You should be able to winch it up onto a dock pretty easily. You can't leave it in the water.

There is almost no difference between square and round-nose superjets besides the squares being so damn ugly.

I would try and talk mom and dad into shelling out $3-4000 for someone elses 1997+ with a pipe, holds, msd and impeller and be done with it. You might have to take the trash out a bit more often but that what parents are for. Sell em on it before you have to pay yourself. :present:

what is a pipe and msd? i will be paying for the ski no matter what though, parents dont want me to spend my money that much but i got 10k saved anyways. how much can a new superjet be picked up for? personally i have no problem buying a new one because im almost positive i will enjoy riding. my mom says to buy a cheaper one to see if i like it though. the 91 sj on ebay look really clean and its all stock. i might look into that then mod it myself.
i guess ill try the searc feature out on the forum :)

Get a job (you bum! :biggrin:), work for a couple of months, and buy a 701 or even a 650 Squarenose.

If you want one to learn on you can find older kawi and superjet that are already moded pretty cheap.(especially kawis) I just bought a 650sx all stock and put about a grand into it already, from the sounds of it you dont want to do that. You can buy a ski like mine with mods for around a grand. Everyone is going to be bias to the superjets though, which are great skis, just cost a little more.

For example. I just sold (here on the X for a friend) a 99 Superjet with a TON of goodies for 2500.

The most I have ever paid for my own ski is 4500.

Somewhere in that range should be more than enough.

Just find a clean 96+ Superjet with whatever.

Hell, if your really feeling jumpy, grab one for around 5 kinda loaded and reinforced and ready to beat the hell out of. But I would never buy a new one knowing what I do to them.

Dont spend all your money on a new SJ(as nice as that would be), theres plenty of older SJ's and Kawi's out there to get your hands on.
Now personally i'm a Kawi guy and never owned a superjet but i'll tell you that for the purpose of learning, the Kawi's have a terrible learning curve unless you buy a 750 or 800 (older 440, 550, and 650 are a bit more tough to learn on). Get a superjet with the 701 with some light mods and be done with it...Stock SJ is good too but ask around because you can easily pay too much for one. SJ's are like Jeeps, they hold thier value very well.

for a reasonable price comparison...you can find a good used Kawi 800 for around $3k, but in most people opinions the 800 is a race ski and hard to freestyle on but probably the most stable jetski to learn on...if your looking to get into anything like freestyle/freeride then find you a SJ for about 1500-2500 with a pipe and prop and be done with it till you save some more money and get footholds and all that BS.


and for gods sake listen to your mom and dont spend all your saving on a ski!! your still young and you'll have PLENTY of time to tinker around and do other stuff.

ya, im pretty close to atl. im trying to find and sj but ebay and craigs list are failing me. then again its only been three days of looking. i dont plan on spending all of my money but i dont NEED it right now per say. College is almost free for me and i make about 200 a week so im not in that bad of shape.
thanks for all the input, ill keep my eyes open for a sj.

o ya, is there anything i need to do if im gonna ride in salt water? i know to flush it and all but is that it? for now ill b in fresh but i might go to daytona later this summer and it would be fun to ride there im sure
