Step 1: remove cover and pad from plastic
Step 2: After cover and pad are removed you will notice that there is a lip around the edge of the plastic. In order for turf to lay flat, this lip needs to be removed...just use a dremel, grinder, sander, whatever to get rid of it.
Step 3: Test fit...I found with using UMI freestyle bars the plastic rubs the crossbar pad a bit and may need some grinding to ensure proper clearences, especially when bars are fully turned.
Step 4: Sand entire surface of plastic base that will come in contact with turf, to allow for proper adhesion.
Step 5: cut turf to fit...
Step 6: Coat turf and plastic base with a good layer of contact cement...use a couple coats if necessary.
Step 7: Once contact cement is dry lay turf over the center of the plastic base where it is flat and make sure it adheres properly. Once the center is stuck down real good I usually take a hair dryer/heatgun and heat up the areas that are going to be curved down. Helps mold better to the pad and makes it easier to work with. Once the sides are done, move to the back of the pad and finish off the rest.
Step 8: Trim off excess turf with a nice sharp razor blade.
Step 9: I like to run a bead of glue not contact cement but a water proof glue around the edges of the turf to prevent it from coming apart, than I put some clamps around the edges of the entire pad while the glue dries.
Step 10: Thats it!
I know this seems real basic but I have seen a few in the past that have been done without shaving off the lip that is under the pad and they just end up looking goofy. Figured I would throw this out there just to help any one out who is thinking of doing it. Don't have any pics right now, but I'll post them up when I get back to my computer.
Note: Maybe one of the mods can move this to the tech FAQ section...I wasn't allowed to post it in there.
