How to turf a SN chin pad

Step 1: remove cover and pad from plastic

Step 2: After cover and pad are removed you will notice that there is a lip around the edge of the plastic. In order for turf to lay flat, this lip needs to be removed...just use a dremel, grinder, sander, whatever to get rid of it.

Step 3: Test fit...I found with using UMI freestyle bars the plastic rubs the crossbar pad a bit and may need some grinding to ensure proper clearences, especially when bars are fully turned.

Step 4: Sand entire surface of plastic base that will come in contact with turf, to allow for proper adhesion.

Step 5: cut turf to fit...

Step 6: Coat turf and plastic base with a good layer of contact cement...use a couple coats if necessary.

Step 7: Once contact cement is dry lay turf over the center of the plastic base where it is flat and make sure it adheres properly. Once the center is stuck down real good I usually take a hair dryer/heatgun and heat up the areas that are going to be curved down. Helps mold better to the pad and makes it easier to work with. Once the sides are done, move to the back of the pad and finish off the rest.

Step 8: Trim off excess turf with a nice sharp razor blade.

Step 9: I like to run a bead of glue not contact cement but a water proof glue around the edges of the turf to prevent it from coming apart, than I put some clamps around the edges of the entire pad while the glue dries.

Step 10: Thats it!

I know this seems real basic but I have seen a few in the past that have been done without shaving off the lip that is under the pad and they just end up looking goofy. Figured I would throw this out there just to help any one out who is thinking of doing it. Don't have any pics right now, but I'll post them up when I get back to my computer.

Note: Maybe one of the mods can move this to the tech FAQ section...I wasn't allowed to post it in there.

You can also cover some or all of the old plastic base with Hydro turf 3/16 under pad. It can be sanded to take out the imperfections of the plastic base and you can radius near the edges. This gives a little padding but does not add near the size of the original padding. When I covered my RN stock chin pad I ended up sanding most of the padding off of the sides and near the edges but left nearly the full 3/16 thickness on top. I figure this will help cushion the blow if I ever smack into it. Looks great IMO

I used the fat hydroturf padding under mine, I think it was the 1 inch, and mine looks exactly the same size as stocker except with turf on it. I used a belt sander on the sides and top. I am with Keefer, I like the thought of some padding there! :wavey: I also wrapped my turf all the way around and under the edges.

PFD Straps work real well, too.

To answer your question though - I don't think it'd be a good idea to try and turf over the stock material.

I did the same. Left the lip and laid padding down first and blended the padding to the lip, then I layed turf on top.

Does anyone have a pic or two. I like the look but haven't seen any pics of the process. I have a general idea in my head I'm just not sure about the plastic piece as I have never taken one apart. If its a brand new ski would it be better to wait a year or so to do this, or should I do this at the same time I turf in my tray? Is there any benifits to doing this right away?
