Holy Friggin Backfire!

So I flipped my ski over from filling in the big hole I put in the nose last weekend and started re-assemble. Got the waterbox, tank and battery in in record time and decided to give it a test fire before tomorrows ride. Set the hood on to keep it quiet for the neighbors and went at the start button.

Usual engine cranking noise, no start..... Cranking some more......BOOOOOM
HOOD POPS OFF...... Smoke everywhere.......and my ears are ringing

As fast as I could I cleared the smoke and got ready to put out a fire. I thought the battery blew up. Now my wifes in the garage yelling "Are you OK" cause apparently I didn't hear her the first two times she asked. The smoke clears and the battery is fine. Now I can see smoke from the waterbox area. Grabbed a flashlight and saw this (pictured below). The elbow between the pipe and waterbox blew up!!!
Luckily I had a spare, threw it on after making sure the exhaust didn't have a rag or something stuck in it, replaced the plugs and she kicked after that. Whew, I was sure scared for a minute. Thoughts of Matt Smith burning his garage down from working on his ski were more present than ever.

When I went to start my Blaster (prob 8 mo ago), I closed the hatch, hit the button, and BOOM. Samr thing, hood poped up, smoke everywhere. Actually blew the waterbox apart at the seam. Blaster box is fiberglass. You are lucky nothing else went wrong.

Are you ridding tomorrow (Sat)?

what causes that elbow to blow like that

Unburned fuel igniting in the exhaust. Apparently the path of least resistance is not out the tailpipe, rather through the elbow.

Ditto, Just what he said.....

I Had fouled a set of plugs on the water. Waited a day and replaced.Hit the start button "Boom" and the hood flew up a good 6". Even found a piece of the water box last month when I pulled the motor.

You might pull the reeds and check them because on a big backfire like that you can break a few easily.

You better be wrong. Those are moto-tass reeds and they only have 2 tanks on them. Might as well attach an m-80 to a hundred dollar bill. :aargh4:

If they're VForce reeds, they are much more likely to be busted than stockers would be.
I've had it happen to me more than once.

I rode it this weekend, It ran great. I know I need to check the reeds, but I don't want to. If they are shot I might have anger issues. I just patched a wall in the gargae from the last time! It seems a broken torque wrench may have slipped outta my hand before I returned it to Home Depot. Thank you Husky.
