Hey everyone yesterday i ended the year with nothing better than a good old trip to Oceanside for some wave riding. The surf was small so i wanted to experiment and do a wave re entry but every time i came at the wave from an angle i either A: got tipped and rolled and ate ********taki or launched off the wave at the angle i took just away from the wave. now the waves i was hitting were not completely veritical yet they were steep launchers so could anyone coach me through the tricks and steps to getting one of these down?
thanks

Rip it... Fearless.

You have to hit the wave right when it is crashing and you have to hit it hard on a 45... The wave will start to curl over and smack into you... that's when you punch it and turn towards the shore... the wave should launch you back in front of it. It takes a lot of timing.

I am sure others here can give you a better description.

I'm glad that you're out there trying to do what you can on your ski. What a great way to get started. If any time you want to head up north to PISMO to practice your re-entry let me know...and we can hook up and ride together.

Don't wait until summer, winter is the best time to ride at PISMO. I also know a couple of guys from Ventura that comes up once in a while to ride, maybe you can catch a ride with them.

Head for the shoulder of a wave that is throwing pretty good at a 30 degree angle. If you are on a 550 hit it with some momentum since you don't have the power to thrust yourself up. The lighter hull should make it pretty easy. Head up the wave to the shoulder and when you are about halfway up the tranny but before you hit the shoulder turn it in to shore as hard as possible and give it full throttle. Pop off the wave and tuck the tray up and hang off the back. Hold on for the ride. If you did it perfect you will land disaster on the edge of the whitewater and you will drop right back in and out run the wave with out any effort.

This is all timing and practice I think. I try them eery trip to surf and once I get my timing right its awesome (this takes half a freekin day). But without surf to practice in on regular basis I seem to start all over every trip.
Its fun as hell though. I usually end up landing just behind the break. But like posts above say, be hanging off back when you land in or ahead of break or nose down you will go hard and fast.

re-entry's in my opinion are the most difficult and technical trick there is. I would start with just trying to carve the wave. In other words, approach it as if you're going to do a re-entry but don't get any air, and this will start to give you a feel for how to do them. You want your weight forward, not back. The hardest part is finding the right spot of the wave to hit and many of the waves never even form right to begin with. Some days it is impossible, because the waves just aren't there for it.

yes... your weight sould be forward until you land, then get to the back if needed...

I lift my feet and push the nose of the ski down to level out the ski so when you land, you can still be hot on the throttle.. Think of it like a small nose stab, kinda... it's something you have to get the feel for and it takes lots of time... I agree w/ Mike... It is the most difficult trick to master...

the biggest things for me in a re-entry is making the bottom of your ski match the face of the wave, and looking where you want to land.

i never would have been able to learn it without coaching from some of the best in the world. in other words, you should hit oceanside more often. youll get good fast. and with that 550, mike serlin will always be willing to tow you back, right mike ?
