Hate to start a sn vs rn thread but...

Its been about 2 months since ive even seen my 550 and i really want to get it fixed and but a new superjet for the summer. Ive been planning on getting a RN but after buying a 07 Mustang GT it doesnt seem like the best bet right now. So im kinda stuck, should i get a bare minimum rn or just go for a sn? I really want the power/performance upgrade from my 550 but i also want it to look less like it was made before i was born. I couldnt stand people saying "wow that thing is older than you" when i rode around on the lake.

I ride all flatwater but one of these days ill make it to a freeride for some surf. And im sure there are lots of threads on this but ive been out of the game since fall so bare with me. Pics of some nice looking SNs would really help me out.

talk to mark gomez (fearlessnuts), he will inform you that your 550 in tuned form is just fine for freeriding and surf applications.....

People will always say that the ski is older than you.
I always get " do they still make those things".
Its not like there is alot of poeple on that little lake Jackson.

When I used to have my '86 550 a couple years ago, people always came up to me thinking it was some "new" thing on the market because they'd never seen one before. Standups are a little more rare in Canada. Everyone only seems to pay attentions to the Sea Couches.

Here's a pic of a pretty nice, clean looking SN. I got this pic off PWCToday a while back from one of the members there:

what did huey lewis say?

it's hip to be square

the 550 will never compare to a sj. you will drop tons of money in to it and the reliability will never be there. the sj will need less mods to get it where you want it.

I'd have to disagree about the 550 and reliability, but completely agree a 550 will never amount to a SJ.

You'll want a setup like Wayne or Boyd's. They have the best skis I've ever ridden.

550's are the most reliable. reliability mostly depends on who is putting the engine together, what mods have been done to it, and who owns the thing.

i was referring to modding it to get a lot of power. once you start adding mods to get the power the reliability starts to drop. the more mods = more things that can go wrong. that is with any ski. the sj with a 701 and a pipe is pretty reliable. trying to get 90 plus hp out of a 550 will cost you reliability.

hopefully next time you see my sn it will have a girdled head installed.:sneaky:

yeah, a race modified ski, not one setup for freeriding and recreational purposes. you don't need to squeeze 90 hp out of a 550 for that stuff. the only reason those big skis need that much power is because the hulls are so heavy. 550's don't have that issue.

I have a 440/750 and a sn sj and they are totally different skis. My wife hates the sj cause its heavier and she likes how she can handle the lighter js hull. I love my sn, but challenge and fun factor goes to the 440/750. Keep in mind im talking about flatwater lakeriding, if I had some surf I would only use the sn cause I would need all the help I can get as far as stability. Those small hulls will wear you out twice as fast as the sn. I also have a fun time with captivation on that 440. My sn has tons more bottom snap. Im counting the days till spring so I can put some time on the fx1 with the kawi pump mod, I think its gonna be the best of both worlds, lightweight like the 440/750 with the low end snap of the sj.

Oh. Well... No argument there.

Pointless to squeeze that much outta a 550, IMO. Better to slap in a 750.

not to mention the fact that ANY ski you decide to setup for the surf is going to cost you, regardless. you're going to spend more on a superjet than you will a 550 due to the difference in the cost of parts, let alone the cost of the ski itself.
