Has anyone ever bought a ski from canada?

The 9% duty is because it is made in Japan. I guess it would only apply to the Yamaha's, however I got two of them over without paying it. They must of assumed they were made in the USA. You don't pay the RIV fee if the trailer is over 15 years old also.

When I talked to services canada about bringing a ski in from the staes they said that there was no set rules/law about it. It was really up to the discretion of the person you were dealing with at the border or when you went to register it. Messed up I know but thats our government for yeah.

In the spring when I went to register the X2 I got from michigan I got dinged the %14 tax plus an additional %9 in import/duty fees. After talking to a friend of mine he said I shouldn't of had to pay the 9% so thats when I went in to services canada to talk to them and they said it was a grey area. They ended up reimbursung me the %9 duty.

That sucks. We dont have to pay any taxes at all bringing a ski into the states. The only extra cost is the registration fee, but thats required no matter where you buy from.

From the site....

"The fees for the RIV program are:

Vehicles entering the RIV program with a form 1
$195.00 + GST and QST for vehicles entering through a port in Quebec
$195.00 + GST for vehicles entering through a port in any other province

Vehicles entering the RIV program with a form 3 (parts)
$70.00 + GST and QST for vehicles entering through a port in Quebec
$70.00 + GST for vehicles entering through a port in any other province"

I can't believe that you guys ar getting away with not paying duty! Thats wicked! Its a Japanese developed product, which makes it subject to Duty if the vehicle is under 15 years old.

You can however buy a 90/91 squarenose without paying duty.

My next ski will come from the states too. Our dollar goes a lot further down there.
Like jetx mentioned, even after all the bull******** at the border with extra charges and such its still better..

1) You have access to many more boats,
2) often boats that don't have to endure our winter sitting outside
3) Aftermarket mods are cheaper and more plentiful in the USA (better chance of getting a ski with nice upgrades)

Even if you spend $4500 when its all said and done for a decent roundnose, that $4500 gets you a better boats with more mods, or a better paintjob/better port job whatever it may be, for the same amount of coin.

Its not uncommon to have a 96/97 Superjet bone stock go for $4000+, and tha sad part is we only have so many to choose from, so someone will pay the $4000....

Sickning...
