Let her have all the fun she wants! Super stoked for your family. The lakes we ride are sometimes filled with idiots and although my daughter has wanted to ride solo for years I haven't been able to let her go on any descent rides. But... She turns 14 in March and already has studied her butt off for her boating license. At 14 yrs in Nevada you can legally acquire a boating license. And she is very aware of other boaters and their direction of travel. Yah... She's so excited to be outriding her dear ol dad lol. Any activity that can be enjoyed as a family is the best. Congrats!!

I love the first dolphin pic!! I would love to meet her too! Hopefully you and your family will be able to make it to one of the Tona Meets!

It will happen again. Hopefully soon, but the economy took out one of our commercial clients, so we're working on replacing them at the moment. But we are still either going sideways or forward, so all is good. Glad we can entertain and I can't tell you how bad we want to get back to the surf. As long as we're skiing standing up all is good!

The economy will get better Jay, so you should be able to get out there soon! I hope you post a video of her first ride too (she is pretty). That looks like an interesting place to ride! Do you ever slow cruise between all of those trees? Cute dog too!

cool pic ,i bet she cant wait to get out and ride
i guess one of the reasons i love living in asia is the freedom the kids get , i was back in australia 2 months ago and all Angel wanted to do was go go-karting i rang every place there to young and to short :-{ stupid rules , in Spain they have a full blown championship for karts and mini bikes for kids her age Thailand is the same .
i love seeing pics of kids doing real stuff with there parents it should be encouraged but instead they seam to make it harder all the time with laws and restrictions .
i want my daughter to grow up knowing that she can do anything if she wants as long she tries and practices .

Don't listen to all these cooks who are afraid of their own shadow. Get them riding as soon as they want to and show them the right way.
One of my biggest pet peeves about the USA is how everyone is so artificially safety conscious. Not all kids around the world are retards who have been raised in a bubble hooked up to a playstation, you know.

HA HA HA Thats classic! My sister in law is such an over protective basket case, she shields her kids like the entire world is out to get them. It shows to as the poor kids lack of self confidence is blatantly obvious. Makes me and my wife sick, she doesn’t understand that her sheltering parenting style will do way more harm in the long run than if she just let them get a few bruises now and then

What do you think causes her to be that way John?

Only get to slow cruise on the way to and from camp due to no wake zone. Lame! But that's the rules. And yah the dog (LuLu) is a sweetie. 3 pounds of fury right there!!! LOL!

Luckily for me she (daughter) hasn't been able to drive a go cart yet, but she puts the hurt to the golf cart once in a while. She has a strange addiction to adrenaline.

Here's a link to a vid that was taken the same day as the pic (before the weather changed) But you can kind of see what the rest of the lake looks like. High desert mostly. 5,000' but it's close and fun. Sorry Shanes, not trying to threadjack at all.

I remember that vid...cool song too!! Lulu LOLOL  Too bad on the no wake! There was a place up in Georgia off I-75 near Barrett Parkway I use to ride carts (as an adult, lol)...I STILL love to ride, and it has been a while! These things were high speed too! One of the Georgia boyz will know where I am talking about for sure! No idea if it is still there, but it rocked!!! I know they had requirements, but I don't recall them being too strict! My ex had an 11 year old in his cart with him and took it up on two wheels trying to beat me (dummie, he lost too)!

This might have a bit to do with your sister-n-law John, but I would think many other variables come into play on an individual basis:

I mentioned monkeys in an earlier post. Scientist study them frequently due to their close resemblance to humans, yet similarities exist within other groups.

Spider Monkeys:

Behavior: The strongest social bonds are formed between females and young offspring.
Reproduction: Each female bears only one offspring on average, every 3 to 4 years. Until age six to ten months, infants rely completely on their mother.[14] Males are not involved in raising the offspring.

It seems logical that since a female carries the child inside of her for so long, that an especially strong protective bond is developed. That said, I have seen many males (human) more protective than females. With everything, I think moderation is good.

Hit the nail on the head. My girlfriends family is the exact same way. They are totally koo-koo for cocoa puffs! Its hard work, but shes worth it haha.

I think what Shanes is doing is awesome. We have a 13 year old kid in our group who is absolutely freaking awesome. He is more then capable to ride a ski and make good decisions.

My whole life, I was exposed to fun things like jet skiing and dirt bikes. Though, my dad made things very difficult for me. His lack of support and encouragement made me want to do the things I wanted to do even more. Everything I have, I had to work really hard for (while living under his roof). Everyday, he still gives me :):):):) about owning a jet ski. It takes a heavy tole mentally. Though, I keep fighting and as a result, its all I think about and I have a bad ass jet ski (coming soon).

I am a psychology major and I have learned a lot! I am by no means a psychologist or a therapist (obviously) but what I do know, is that what Shanes is doing is the best thing. He is allowing his daughter to explore her world without limitations. She is making decisions and growing. She will become an independent and still have a secure attachment with her father. Shanes is guiding her along the way to make sure that she is safe and having a good time. I wish Shanes was my dad!

Truth be told (when it comes to humans), fathers show the same amount of love and care as mothers do for their children.

The fetus can hear the mothers voice and sounds and builds a relationship even before birth. The infant builds an attachment with the mother first. Though, the day the infant is born. The infant will build a relationship with the father that is just as secured as the mothers (depending if the father is there or not).

Hit the nail on the head....

Maybe, maybe not…you do not know that particular family’s dynamics (neither does John), so you can not make that call. If you had already earned your degree (and focus were child psych) and had been counseling that individual family for a good length of time, perhaps you could give a better assessment. You can speak for yourself as you did, but that is all…that does not make it right for all. It seems logical it would be dependent upon the individual child’s general disposition, as well as the parents. In general though, it would seem that being over-protective is not good, just as being under-protective is a bad deal as well

Family background and dynamics are irrelevant. The child is influenced by parents and social forces. There is always a cause and effect. If a child is held back from the world, he or she will be lost. They will make poor decisions because they lack experiences. They will become dependent people. Regardless if they change in their adolescence or late adulthood, they will always revert back to a familiar state when experiencing a crisis or a unfamiliar situation. Which in this case, dependent.

I guess we are all jacking poor Angel’s thread, LOL! Plus, I was hoping to see some other children’s photos doing some fun things!
`
You contradict yourself. Family is a social force…parents are a social force, so it is relevant. But anyway, I don’t disagree that you personally may have been overprotected, simply due to the nature of your posts. We are in agreement that overprotecting a child is not good, so it is all good; provided, that you can agree that under protecting a child is just as bad.

Whoops! Saw my typo, haha! I will leave it unedited for my embarrassment. We are on the same page. Honestly Suzi, I have read your posts before and I am always impressed. I was really hoping to get into a educated debate with you! Haha, terrible me. Next time....

Shanes rocks!

LOL... I've never had children, so I don't claim that knowledge...maybe I am an unbiased party, so it works well that way. It would be interesting to learn of the true statistics as to under-age accidents on skis within the U.S., relevant to this conversation though. I don't have time for a debate honestly...starting tomorrow I should make myself extremely busy.
