Other Do you ski by yourself?

With the cooler weather coming on, from past exerience I know my girlfriend and our female friend consider the riding season over. When we go out, I ride my RN Superjet, girlfriend on my STX15F and our friend on my STX12F. I don't mind the cooler water and air, in fact, I like the fact there is less boat traffic. I'm thinking about making a hitch carrier for my Superjet and going by myself. My concern is what if something happens to the ski, I'll have a LONG swim back to shore pulling a ski. And of course there is always the possibility of me getting hurt without anyone there to come rescue me. It got me wondering how many others go out by themselves.

I used to live on a small lake and rode all the time by myself, every night in fact. The difference was, it was a long slim lake, I rode at one end where I had 3 shores within swimming distance. I also had 2 other skis on the trailer so I could ditch the ski, swim to shore and then use one of the other ones to go rescue it with. I always rode with a life vest and helmet and really wasn't trying big moves where I was at too much risk in the first place.

I wouldn't even consider riding the ocean or any moving water without at least 2 other riders...that I know and trust.

Here's a couple pics of how small my riding area was. Yes, that's ice on the water which only makes the point further about riding when nobody else will.

Chech the last pic; In Alberta, you are never quite alone EVER. If I was really in trouble, I could just grab onto the legs of a Mosquito and hitch a ride to safety.

I do the exact same thing. i have a lake house on a small 100 acre lake. i ride with helmet and close to house, in case something.

If i go alone its usually to do a short test. I always ride upstream of the boat ramp and within swimming distance of shore. If i break down I can float back. I'd never ride alone where we ride- There is a dam down stream and you always hear of people going over it and not making it.

I live on a little channel outlet from a powerplant(welcome to jersey) So Ill ride whenever, but I wont go far away if there is no boaters around. Usually I tell someone in my family im going out and if im not back in so long to take a look for me or bring out little boat out. I wont ride surf by my self, tho I have been tempted.

Sounds like you might need a screen name change, seriously if I had to wait for other people to ride I would never get to ride

Ride solo frequently in the spring/summer. This will be my first year riding in cooler water. I plan to stay closeto my launch spot in case something happens and I need to swim.

I go to the lake alone occasionally. When alone, I tend to stick closer to the ramp. If I am the ONLY person I can see on the water... I stick very close to the ramp. If the lake is relatively busy I will venture out from the ramp, but I try to stay close enough that I could drag my ski back to the ramp via shoreline before dark if necessary. I always take my helmet and a whistle when alone.

I always tell my wife before I get out on the water, where I launched, and what I'm riding. I give her a call when back out of the water as well.


I would NEVER ride in surf alone.



*edit* - Ski choice has a direct effect on distance I'm willing to travel from the ramp as well. I'll ride my stock ski on a sightseeing expedition... I ride my modified ski fairly close to a home base.

I never go alone. I have learned from past experiences, and that's anything can happen on the water! Sometime even riding with a partner isnt quick enough.

Just not worth the risk in my opinion.

I ride alone occasionally, pretty rare though. Always within swimming distance to shore. That distance depends on water temps

you guys that ride alone are nuts. maybe on a tiny flat lake you feel comfortable, but one hit to the noggin that knocks you out=death.

No one on here wears a life vest that floats you on your back with your airway open. Too easy to get hurt or die IMO. Then again I only ride the ocean/surf and have seen how quick things can go wrong/bad so maybe I'm a bit skewed.

Only if waves are 2' or less...and I don't jump much, just carving or cruising. I stay within 75 yds of shore....after Bruins, I'll never ride in big waves alone again. We still (and never will) know what happened out there...but it made me come up with 4 different scenarios of what could happen.

I ride alone, I wear helmet and a good vest. I tell my wife I am out and I bring my JCB water proof mobile phone with me on the ski. There´s a rescue boat stationed 5 minutes from my riding spot. It is the best I can do. Sometimes I can get a buddy to join me on the X2, but that's rare.

You wear a class 1 or 2? I wear a 3 and it wont keep me face up if unconscious.

Any uscg vest I've ever worn will leave me face down if I hit the water that way. I was under the assumption only the big orange ones that wrap around the neck will float you head up if you are knocked unconscious.
