its a very good idea
if you dont run it and it leaks you will be sad
it takes up all the little imperfactions
i normally fit a gasket and then use grease on one side and sealant on the other
so it comes off nice and easy

lets not forget about the *thickness* of the gasket. that plays a role in how the bendix is seated. no gasket = tighter tolerance for the bendix. not sure if it matters.

Funny you mentioned that. This weekend while replacing my bendix, I did some measuring to make sure everything was right with the washers and I came up with 2mm gap between the front washer and the flywheel cover bushing. With the spring holding it back, that's about right.
