Disagree with ya slutty.:bs2: When its a flat day and we are rippin around Lake Erie to the Rock Hall, Browns stadium, and the Flats, doing subs, shooting fountains, doing cannonballs off of lighthouses, riding the rapids behind super tankers, hunting down boat wakes to sky off of all at full speed, and causing general chaos I consider it freeriding... (we don't just go in circles in a small area and practice tricks..)

is that what you think us freestylers do?

DJ.... all the tricks you decribed are flatwater freestyle tricks...

Freeriding IMO includes breaking waves, w/o them it's freestyle

Freeriding - just riding, man. just riding.

I would have to agree with the DR and DJ on this one. I don't think you need waves to Freeride...

To me, Freeriding is being out on the water, ripping it up, and becoming one with the ski in harmony with the water...

Freestyle = rules, judging, competition, set tricks, regimented
Freeriding = friends, family, beer, unorganized fun on the water

What do you call riding in salt marshes?

I disagree with you also, freeriding is a state of mind IMO.

I've done just about every type of riding there is, from racing to flying through salt marshes to waves to glass lakes to creek running.

Ever watch Jet Dreams? That video is freeriding to me, some is in the waves, some is just hanging out in cove messing around doing whatever.

When I first got to pwct I was like, "Freeride? What the hell is that?!" What I've gathered since then is that Freeride is ocean/wave (not wake) riding and freestyle is flatwater tricks. I don't see how competing or not enters into it. Is Joe Kenny not a freerider when he rides waves in a competition?

That's cool... I guess you could include everything in the freeride catagory if ya want, but that is just watering down what it really is, isn't it????... There is nothing wrong or lesser about riding flatwater, but I have always seen Jet ski freeride as pertaining to waves... I suppose if you jump wakes that could be considered freeride, kinda like FLo LeVot is a women:biggrin: ... (joke) it's not in it's true form... Please don't take this as me saying freeride is better, cause to each his own, but It's different and there should be a line at which things change from freestyle to freeride if the term has any meaning at all....

Actually who really cares... go ride, be happy and rock that ****!!!!!!!!!!!!

IMO... Is Joe Kenny a Freerider, yes, does he also compete in freestyle, yes. He just competes in the ocean instead of flat water.

I would consider the O-Side competition a freestyle competition in the ocean with mother nature making the waves. Flat water freestyle you have to make your own waves.

Look at it like surfing, you can surf just to be out there with the waves and nature, or you can compete and be judged on how well you ride the waves, pick the waves and do tricks that have names.

I agree that freeride is a "form" of freestyle, so is flatwater freestyle. Flat water Freestyle would be the form of freestyle that pertains to riding and tricking in areas w/ no waves...

The general feeling I get is the people that only or primarily ride surf consider freeride to be surf only.

Like I mentioned, I've done just about every type of riding there is, for years at a time. I started in Charleston, SC in the surf and salt marshes, moved to Hawaii and did surf with some flatwater thrown in, moved to Kentucky and switched to racing, then to competitive freestyle, then to just fun riding with whatever water I've got available.

Everyone's definition is going to be different I guess. Mine is just going out to ride with no set plan, making the best of what you've got and having fun.

If you're going out and just practicing until you're dead trying one single trick, I'd say that is not freeride no matter where you are.

:cheer: I think that sums up the whole idea of what all of us are about. Everybody call it what you want, whatever fits for your style.....it's still all about the fun, the challenge & the friends made along the way.:cheer:

Freeriding is not necessasarily a surf only thing. I've always believed that pushing the limits of you and your ski and working the natural conditions that you have present before you is what freeriding is. This is something different from rec riding which I define as cruising and putting around.

What about wake jumping...?? (kinda both?)
What if its mixed in with flatwater??..

I think what we do in Niagara is definately Freeriding...I think it is basically anykind of aggressive riding without rules..(just for fun) Those of us w/o waves all of the time find things to do that are aggresive, fast and fun. Going big for the sake of going big!

Freestyle: Flatwater
Surf: Waves
Freeriding: Anything hardcore without rules

Same with Skiing: Freeskiing isn't just getting big air in the terrain parks... it is riding the bumps and steeps and cliffs and dodging trees, jumping on logs and rails and getting the big air in the parks and off of cliffs and rocks. Not in competition, but just for the sake of going big!

I would consider Niagra freeriding... sure

Freeride jetskiing involves surf. That is the term used for surf riding. Freestyle is the term used for flatwater. Joe Kenney would go nuts if you told him he just entered a freestyle competition. Just having a good time on a jetski is called "riding a jetski". If people start calling some form of lake riding freeriding, then us surf riders are going to need to find a new term, cuz what we do is like nothing else.
