So that's what a hydrolocked crank looks like. Thought I'd never find out.:cheer:

Dammit. Got two tanks through the new topend before that sub.:banghead:

I guess that means the only parts that came with my original engine will be bolts, starter, and flywheel cover. :Banane01:

HYDRO-LOCK

get it?  :haha:

edit: water don't compress.. so when you suck too much water into the cyl through the intake and the piston's on its way up... something's gotta give..

i know what hydro-lock is dumbass:banghead: ............. but ive heard a few guys on here talk about fruckin up their motor tryin to start them with water in the cylinder..... ..... and i just cant see that happening from a starter bump over

You know....I am not sure if it was running and it happened, or if it was from trying to start it. I know I had a hell of a time trying to start it. Eventually it did turn over. :lightning: :banghead: I shoulda known better - but it was probably too late at that point, anyways.

As for shorter stroke and lower compression - that's kinda how I found out about this. I did a little impromptu compression check tonight - somehow I found the ski to run somewhat sluggish the second half of yesterday. :arms: (Seriously...it ran almost great after the event!)
I found 150 on one jug, which worried me. (Normal...170). I found 120 on the other.
Okay, tear down time. I am getting good at this. :Banane01:
The 150 compression was due to a small piece of bottom case - knocked loose by the crank web on the other side - getting sucked into that bore. Pried it out of the piston. The other side was lower...well, because I have an anti-stroker now! :bs2:

The good news is that Phill has a crank I can use for a while. Also, I think I can get a good deal on a fairly new one from a board member.
Additionally, the cylinder just needs a hone and rings.

Hey Saki....are those 62T cases I see in that pic? :sneaky:

I was all happy you help me tune my ski yesterday:Banane01: ....but thinking about it.....you have some ********ty luck with these things and I should keep you the hell away from my ski:bigeyes:

Your luck with motors really blows the big one, eh?
What flame arresters are you running?
I go pretty deep sometimes and hardly even get a bog for very long. and I only have one 360gpm pump.

I agree with that. My current hood doesn't seal very well - has something to do with the hood itself and my crappy hoodseal.

MattE,

You may want to look into a different intake setup. Do you have a stock setup or a breathable unit? I'm curious how one sub could even do that?

Doug

Edit: Looks like I'm behind the 8 ball with my comment... I forgot to him submit about a hour ago.

My FA's are two single stock Flame Arrestors. I really don't recall whether it was long sub or a fountain. I think the hood/hoodseal combo let way too much water in.
No better FA could have saved it, IMHO.

I was wondering the same thing how could a sub do that? Did you not have a hood on? A new hood seal may be in order. I know of some material from McMaster that works quite well for me. Is one of your air intake tubes pointed right at the carbs?

Another thing, and correct me if I'm wrong....

When you sub, the ski is still right side up. The water comes in the hood and get thrown to the bottom of the bilge by way of the water tubes from the hood. The entire bilge would need to fill up in order that water be sucked into the carbs in order for this to happen, no? Now if you flipped it over while water was in the bilge then it's much easier to get water in the carbs for something like this to happen.

i am now a FIRM believer that ITS ALL ABOUT THE HOODKIT

my boat DOESNT EVEN HAVE a bilge pump. i rode in the surf all day long and never had so much as a hiccup. i don't even have flame arrestors!! just two huge 46mm carb throats exposed to open air under my hood.

the wammer hood kit is UNREAL. ive never ridden a boat with a hoodkit of this quality.

everyone at sebastian this weekend witnessed it firsthand.. even when i'd bail off a huge roll and my boat landed 20 feet away from me upside down in the surf, it'd still fire right back up in 2 seconds by the time i got to it and flipped it over.

:hail: :hail: :hail: :hail: :hail: WAMMER HOOD

man, totally..........dont forget about the seal..........I have a blowsion liner on a stock hood and that thing keeps water out like no other, so long as the hood seal is intact....

another thing....I have gotten into the habit on a deep stab to just hit the kill button.......it has made it so that when I pop back up the boat starts and rips out of the water, before it always took on a bit of water and sputtered.........but not a single hiccup since starting the kill method..

i think we need to have a competition.....Matt E vs. wavedemon for destructo-king

Hehee....I am just glad that it was a dumb riding maneuver that took out the engine, instead of a dumb motor assembly maneuver.
