crank seal

what would cause this crank seal to partially pop out? I wasn't really wanting to tear my motor down this winter but I gotta do what I gotta do any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks

I think you already know what you want/have to do. Do you want a blown motor when you start riding in the spring? A little time and money spent now or a new motor and no riding later?

thing is once I have it apart its not just gonna be a crank seal ill probably end up going with a jm ported top end then bigger carbs and so on and so forth. where does the madness end?

You can repair the crank seal by just removing the bottom case...you don't have to tear the motor completely down.

Take out the engine, drain the case, remove the bottom bolts, remove case, replace the crank seal (I would add new ones, just for extra insurance...they are cheap enough). Retorque bolts and reinstall engine.

I actually will probably tear the whole thing down because judging by the way the rest of the ski was taken care of by the previous owner who knows what other kinds of bandaids there are

even with the coupler off I cant just flip and pop the seal back in correct?

If it popped out once it may do it again if not sealed correctly. If you are unsure of the engine then a complete tear down may be in order.

That seal is the inner rear seal in wrong location, the outer seal has little tabs that face outward. We like to seal the seals to the cases as well.

alwasy use OEM seals
teh SBT seals in a new motor I bought lasted about 3 runs

So this seal was installed in correctly from the get go? Doesnt surprise me

You need to tear it down. Jetmaniac is accurate. Backfires can cause it as well. Regardless, you need to pull down, inspect, and install oem seals.

I had this problem this summer. Turns out I had an out of phase crank from a water intrusion event earlier in the year. Motor would run good for two or three rides then blow an oring/crank seal out of seat/ or munch a piston.

Took me three pistons to finally take it apart and throw the crank out. And I put a new set of seals in after the first blow up also.

Believe me when I say it's cheaper to just tear the whole motor down and inspect. I was lazy and it cost me a bunch more money.

My front seal went after my motor took on water then i tried to start it. The ski ran ok for a while then would'nt start due to all the crap in the flywheel area. I've just had all the seals replaced on mine.

Would hooking up plug wires backwards cause a backfire im thinking this is what blew my seal

that should not do it. it is a wasted spark design meaning that it fires both plugs every time
