Other Complete newb about to spend $$$$$

Hey everyone,

Looking for some advice/help from you guys, as I am about to make my 1st seadoo purchase.

As the title says, I'm a complete newb, but now that I live lakefront, it makes perfect sense to buy a seadoo and hit the water.

Having said that, it so happens that a friend of mine is selling his seadoo. I spoke to him and I am about to make a move here but 1st ... I wanted to hear it from you ... the good, the bad, anything I should know about the following deal:

2005 SEADOO RXP 215
MODIFICATIONS: RIVA STAGE 3 KIT FOR SEADOO RXP -- ET140R SUPERCHARGER -- JIM'S MODIFIED CLOSED LOOP PLATE.

$$$Price$$$

Ok so WITH the above mods, he is asking for $9,000.
WITHOUT the above mods, he is asking for $6,000.

Now don't get me wrong, this is my friend, and there is certain trust there, but at the same time I want to hear unbiased advice. He does claim he got a new engine for it this year and paid $3,000 for it. Also claims the battery is new. ( I haven't found out how new yet ) He also let me know top speed on this is 85 miles ...

These are all the details I can think of at the moment ...

Any feedback here is appreciated before I make a purchase.

Thanks for helping the newb !!!

$6000-7000 would be a fair price for that ski WITH those mods. I have a 2005 RXP with a stage 3 Riva kit, rear exhaust, bigger IC, etc and while it is pretty damn fast, it gets boring quickly. We keep ours around incase one of our standups need a tow; the rest of the time the chicks ride it. Also Seadoos reliability sucks ass.

Spend that money on a stand up!

Really? I have had exactly one 4-Stroke Seadoo come to me for repair (other than owner inflicted stuff like rocks in the pump) in four or five seasons.

We purchased three 2005 RXPs earlier this spring from a guy who had modded two of them and left them to sit for 3-4 years in his garage. One of them had bad SC clutch washers. We replaced the clutch washers in all three as well as the oil pumps in the one that failed. All three ran great so we sold off two of them. The timing chain on one ski broke soon after selling it, so we rebuilt that motor for the price of parts and then a factory Oetiker failed on the other ski and it pretty much sank. We have to take the RXP we kept to the dealership to pay $120 to reinitialize the VTS with the BUDS computer because the battery died. Apparently if you leave the battery disconnected for too long or it dies, the ECU reverts back to GTX programming and you lose the VTS function as well as gain a sensor error for not having a GPS unit.

So, if you do buy the RXP, make sure there are no ceramic SC washers in it, keep a battery tender hooked up at all times, and replace the exhaust valves/flywheel bolts/oetiker clamps. If you do that then it should be somewhat reliable.

I also had a pair of 1999 GSX Limiteds before these, so my view on Seadoo reliablity may be somewhat skewed.

There's the problem and are you really going to blame that on Seadoo rather than on the previous owner neglecting the machines and possibly not knowing what he was doing when modding them?

That's usually what happens with sit downs, they sit since they're boring as f***.
Like other's have said, buy a standup. They're much more fun ;)

If your new to PWC's chances are this friend is gone make the boat sound as badass as possible so that you think your getting a great price. When in reality its worth a few grand less.

What the op forgot to mention is that he is in canada...the market for pwc up here is durastically different than south of the border.

6000 for a stock rxp seems about right up here...can't comment on the mods but do you really need to go 85mph? a stock rxp seems like it would be fast enough. Save the 3G and go buy a stsndup aswell.
