Cold Surf Suit?

I've ridden cold water/air for 30 years and I've tried practically everything. Best thing I have found is a good 3/2 wetsuit, 3 to 5mm on your feet, a 1.5 mm rash guard, good hand warmers and summer gloves, and a float coat PFD. The float cost is the key piece of gear, they are amazing!

Everyone has their own favs, but I can tell you that this combo very works well in 30 degree water temps and I'm never cold while riding. Now someone come up with a good combo for post riding and hanging out on a 30 degree beach.....that's when I get cold!
Portable hot tub

It also depends on your size/weight because in 40 degree air and 38-45 water id be frozen numb in a 3/2 or even my 4/3 ( oniell super freak suit ) so I got a rip curl flash bomb 5.5/4.5 hooded. 7mm boots and I'm a little hot in 40 degree water an 40 air say. But yet I'm 160lbs 6'2 where my buddy could be 195 5'7 and sweating in a 3/2.

But I'd rather be a tad too warm then cold when riding. But with water/ air in low 40 upper 30s I'd assume a quality suit like a rip curl/billabong 4/3 would keep average person real warm in surf since your so active.

The Ideal set up for any So Cal riding from Pismo Beach south to the Mexican border is; a 3/2 "surf suit" that has glued and taped seams, what brand is your own opinion. I prefer Oniell. Stay away from a suit made by a "Jet Ski specific" company, they are usually years behind surf suits mfg's designs. Get some 2mm fin socks to wear under your riding shoes. These are available at any reputable surf shop, usually found in the body board section. For Shoes get something high top to give some added support to your ankles. Most prefer Asic wrestling shoes but I just wear high top skater vans or Chuck Taylors. Get some Jet Pilot gloves, they tend to fall apart but they are the best thickness and best all around glove for what we do, and use the gloves in conjunction with hand warmers.

This set up will be ideal for 90% of the early morning surf riding conditions you will encounter in So Cal. Most of the time we try to avoid riding on windy days but when the wind conditions are hard off shore then I keep a Jet Pilot Tour coat on hand that does the trick nicely.

So if your brain is hurting already-Here's the recap;

3/2 "Surf brand" Wetsuit with glued and taped seams
2mm fin socks
High Top Shoes
Jet Pilot Gloves
Hand Warmers on the ski
Tour Jacket for really windy days

Head, hands and feet ! I agree with Shaunsteezy and 227 My prob is that I have no socks and a wetsuit from a "Jet Ski specific" company. I looked it up - it supposedly is a 3/2 but it was darn cold the last two weeks! I just ordered a pair of socks and I have some jetribe shoes coming from AU as they have been out of them here for the last few months. Im looking at the Oniel Psyhchofreak 3.5/2.5 it might be a little overkill but I already have a lighter suit for most our weather at Oside. Thanks for the insight. Now where can I buy some balls to climb the walls!!

I guarantee once you get socks your wet suit will magically feel warmer. I rode with a buddy who had a thicker suit than me but no socks and he was cold immediately and done within 30 minutes.
