I am currently working on my first jetski build and I recently had my motor ported. I was wondering what is the best way to clean the cases, cylinders, and exhaust manifold to remove any residual dirt or metal prior to reassembling the engine? Is there a special cleaner I should use? Certain type of brush? etc.

very, very ,very hot water and palmolive or similar.
let soak and brush everywhere.
rinse in very,very,very hot water and spray wd40.

at Wyotech we had to clean engine blocks with ATF and white towels till there was nothing left to discolor the ATF one bit... what about doing this? or using 2 stroke oil?

After washing in hot soap and water, Blow dry, wipe out cylinder walls with folded white paper towels and use Marvel Mystery oil on it and keep wiping the cylinder out until you don't get any discoloring on the towel.

Really hot water, liquid dish soap, and a used toothbrush to get inside the ports, rinse it and spray with WD-40 or something similar to stop the rust that forms immediately, wipe with paper towels and if you are getting any grinding/metal residue, rinse and repeat.

Any grit left in there will come out once you start it and mess up your rings/pistons/cylinder walls, and maybe even your muffler bearings.

SuperJett - Thanks for the detailed explanation it helps me to understand the process a little better and the risks involved with not cleaning the internals well enough.

BTW, I do it completely submerged in water so it doesn't have a chance to rust. As soon as you dry it off, it will start to rust so get it sprayed/wiped with oil quickly to stop that.

Thanks, I will be sure to pick up all the supplies I need this week and hammer this out by the weekend.

fyi - no one explained why you use soap and water. I read that soap and water is the only thing that will remove the oil. other oils like trans fluid and so on will just move the dirt and debris around not removing the stuff from the cross hatches in the cyl ect..

So to better understand this, the soap and water actually removes previous dirt and oil, and a quick application of wd40 or Marvel Mystery oil prevents new rust and dirt from attaching to the metal, correct?

Make sure you rinse your wife's toothbrush and put it back when you're done. I forgot one time, never again...
