that makes absolutely no difference. if a chunk of metal from the bearings is jumping around in there, it's going to ping the hell out of every single bit of surface area there is. not only that, but it's going to look "gouged", not "cooked" and melted.

still, usually when I've had a needle bearing take a holiday like that, it jabs the hell out of the entire surface of the piston, not just the outer edges.
